Switching Xenon Headlights ON Causes Vehicle to Enter Into Emergency Running Mode

Model(s):
A6 W/ 3.0L (Eng. Code AVK) w/ Multitronic 2002 --> 2004
Trans. (Code 01J) & Xenon Headlights

Condition

Switching headlights ON while in "S" driving mode or "Tiptronic" may cause the vehicle to enter into emergency running mode.

^ After cycling ignition OFF and ON, all functions are correct again.

^ DTC: 18161 is stored in the transmission DTC memory.

Cause:

When Xenon headlights are switched ON, it causes a low voltage condition, which may cause a failure of the diagnostic signal for Tiptronic switch -F189-.

Service

Install new tiptronic switch -F189- Part No: 4B0 713 243E (see Repair Manual Automatic Transmission, Group 37 - Automatic Transmission - Controls, Housing Selector mechanism servicing, Tiptronic switch -F189-, removing and installing for complete replacement instructions).
