Exhaust System: Adjustments
Exhaust system, aligning to relieve stress
Align exhaust system to avoid stress in the system and to prevent noise as follows:
Notes:
- Be sure muffler mountings are free of stress when installing.
- When aligning and relieving stress, loosen all bolted connections (except exhaust manifold), including mountings for catalytic converter.
- Align exhaust system cold.
- Perform the work in the order described below.
- Dimensions in the illustrations are approximate.
- Check tensioning on left mounting for center muffler.
Dimension -a- 10 to 12 mm (0.4 to 0.5 inch)
Arrow points toward front of vehicle
Aligning catalytic converters
- Dimension -A- = 13 to 17 mm (0.5 to 0.7 inch)
- Dimension -B- = 9 mm (0.35 inch)
-C- must be parallel to bottom of vehicle
- Illustration shows catalytic converters from the rear of vehicle.
Note: Clearance between pipes and cross member at least 34 mm (1.3 inch)
Installation position of double clamps between catalytic converters and center muffler
Notes:
- Always replace double clamps if bolts were loosened.
- Double clamps are shown from rear of vehicle.
- Install bolts on double clamps as shown in illustration. Bolt ends must not protrude beyond bottom of clamp.
Tightening torque for nuts: 40 Nm (30 ft. lbs.).
Tailpipes, aligning
- Dimension -a- = same on both sides (left and right)
Dimension -b- from top of bumper cut-out to tailpipe must be at least 20 mm (0.7 inch).
Rear mufflers, aligning
Illustration shows rear left mounting for rear muffler.
- Move pipes in double clamps between center and rear mufflers until -a- is between 10 and 12 mm (0.4 to 0.47 inch).
Arrow points to front of vehicle
- Distance between exhaust pipes -A- and rear axle -B- (between center and rear mufflers).
Distance -a- = approximately 27 mm (1 1/8 inch)
Distance -b- = approximately 24.5 mm (1 inch)
Note: Illustration shows exhaust pipes -A- from rear of vehicle.
Installation position of rear double clamps
Notes:
- Push pipes of center and rear mufflers together to make contact.
- Always replace double clamps if bolts were loosened.
- Double clamps are shown from rear of vehicle.
- Align bolts on double clamps as shown in illustration. Bolt ends must not protrude beyond bottom of clamps.
- Tightening torque for nuts: 40 Nm (30 ft. lbs.).
