VAG1551 Scan Tool (ST), Connecting and Entering Address Word


Note:The VAG1551 scan tool can be used instead of the VAS5051 tester.
^ Note the test conditions for each scan tool





- With the ignition off, connect VAS5051 (or VAG1551 using VAG1551/3 adapter cable) to the Data Link Connector (DLC)under the dash to the left of the steering column.

Notes:
^ If there is no display, test the data link connector sockets.

^ Pressing the "Print" button switches the VAG1551 printer on; indicator lamp in button comes on.
^ Pressing the "HELP" button on the VAG1551 scan tool prints additional operating information.

- Switch ignition on.
- Press the "PRINT" button to switch the scan tool printer on.
- Press button -1- to select "Rapid data transfer."

Note: The address word selects the control module that you wish to test using the scan tool. It is made up of two digits, which are listed in this repair information.

Example: pressing buttons -O- and -3- selects the "Brake Electronics" address word 03

- Press the -Q- button to confirm input.

Note: If a malfunction occurs when establishing communication between the VAG1551 scan tool and the control module, refer to the four displays and instructions that follow.





- Press the "HELP" button to print a list of possible causes of the malfunction.





- Test power supply and Ground (GND) connections for ABS control module (w/EDL) -J104-.

- Test cable connections for data link connector wire -K-.

If displayed:
- Repair the malfunction.
Refer to Electrical Wiring Diagrams
- After repairing the malfunction, once again enter "Brake Electronics" address word 03 and press -Q- button to confirm input.





If the data link between the VAG1551 scan tool and the control module is established and works properly, the display will now show the control module identification (X), the system identification (Y), the hardware and software versions (Z), and the dealership number (W).

Notes:
^ The (arrow) button is used for advancing through the program sequence.
^ The various On Board Diagnostic (OBD) systems to be tested are described in more detail in this repair information.
^ The control module version can only be changed by replacing the control module.
