Air Injection Pump Relay: Testing and Inspection




Secondary Air Injection (AIR) pump relay -J299, checking


NOTE: The secondary air pump relay is located in the electronics box in the plenum chamber.


- Connect vehicle diagnostic, testing and information system VAS5051 or VAG1551 scan tool and select engine electronics control module by entering address word "01". Refer to "Scan Tool Testing/Scan Tool Connecting and Initial Checks/Connecting VAS5051 or VAG1551" Testing and Inspection
When doing this the ignition must be switched on.
- Start output Diagnostic Test Mode (DTM) and activate secondary air pump relay. Refer to Scan Tool Testing/Output Diagnostic Test Mode (DTM) (Function 03) Testing and Inspection

Secondary Air Injection Pump Relay -J299



Secondary Air Injection (AIR) Pump Relay - J299 activates Secondary Air Injection (AIR) Pump Motor-V101, which runs at intervals until the DTM is terminated by pressing the -> button.

If Secondary Air Injection (AIR) Pump Motor - V101 does not run at intervals:
- Disconnect 2-pin harness connector off secondary air pump motor and connect VAG1527B diode test lamp to disconnected connector using test leads from VAG1594 connector test kit.
- Repeat DTM.

If the diode test lamp now blinks during DTM:
- Replace Secondary Air Injection (AIR) Pump Motor -V101.

If diode test lamp does not blink and secondary air injection pump relay does not click, test activation of secondary air pump relay.

If diode test lamp does not flash but secondary air pump relay clicks, test voltage supply for secondary air injection pump relay.

Checking voltage supply for secondary air pump relay
- Check fuse for Secondary Air Injection (AIR) Pump Relay -J299.

If the fuse is not faulty:


NOTE: The secondary air pump relay is located in the electronics box in the plenum chamber.


- Remove secondary air pump relay from relay carrier.

- Test voltage supply (positive 30) for relay.

If no malfunctions are identified in the voltage supply for the relay.
- Replace Secondary Air Injection (AIR) Pump Relay -J299.

Check activation of secondary air injection pump relay
- Switch ignition off.
- Connect VAG1598/31 test box to wiring harness for engine control module. Do not connect to the engine control module itself.


NOTE: The secondary air injection pump relay is located in the electronics box in the plenum chamber


- Remove secondary air injection pump relay from relay carrier.
- Check for open circuit in following wiring connection:

Secondary air pump Socket on
relay, contact VAG1598/31 test box

Resistance in wiring: max. 1.5 ohm

If no malfunction in wire is detected:
- Replace Motronic Engine Control Module (ECM) -J220.
- Display readiness code. The readiness code must be generated if the DTC memory was erased.
