Side Curtain Protection Airbag, Removing and Installing
WARNING!
Observe safety precautions for working on airbag and side curtain airbag.
1 - Side curtain airbag
- Removing:
- Note radio code (for vehicles equipped with coded anti-theft radio / radio navigation system).
- Disconnect battery Ground (GND) strap/cable and cover the negative battery post.
- Remove D-pillar trim.
- Remove A-pillar trim.
- Disconnect harness connector for side curtain airbag.
- Remove bolts -4- and -5-.
- Remove bolts -6- (4x).
- Place igniter on rear parcel shelf.
- Remove bracket - 2- (6x) from roof frame.
- Take tension strap - 3- and form a loop with igniter -7-.
- Remove side curtain airbag - 1-from vehicle.
WARNING!
Always follow installation sequence for side curtain airbag.
- Installing:
- Remove side curtain airbag -1- from transport container as a loop and secure side curtain airbag -1- in the following sequence, while holding the igniter with one hand.
- First insert bracket -2- with securing pin -8- into mounts at -A-, then insert remaining brackets -2- in toward rear.
- Screw in bolts -6- (2x) at -B- See Fig. 1.
- Remove tension strap -3- from igniter -7-.
- Insert remaining brackets -2-, starting at C See Fig. 2.
- Secure brackets -2- using screws -5- (6x).
- Install bolt -4- at tension strap -3- See Fig. 3.
- Rest of installation is reverse of removal.
- Switch on ignition.
WARNING!
Always be sure no one is in vehicle when connecting battery.
- Connect battery.

5 - Bolt, 5.5 Nm
- 6x
- Self-locking
- Always replace
6 - Bolt, 5.5 Nm
- 2x
- Self- locking
- Always replace
- Use VAS 5122 and VAG 1783
7 - Igniter
8 - Securing pin

- Install bolts -6-.
- Use VAS5122 and VAG1783
Tightening torque: 5.5 Nm

8 - Insert securing pin in guide hole below threaded hole.
- Install bolts -5-.
Tightening torque: 5.5 Nm

- Install bolts -5-.
- Tightening torque: 5.5 Nm
3 - Tension strap
- Install bolts -4-.
Tightening torque: 5.5 Nm
- Do not rotate module when installing bolts -4-.

- Press catches -A- and disconnect connector in direction of arrow.
- Use a screwdriver to pry out clip -1-.
NOTE:
- After connecting battery, vehicle options (radio, clock, electric window regulator) must be checked according to repair manual and/or user manual.
- If the airbag Malfunction Indicator Lamp (MIL) -K75- signals a malfunction, DTC memory must be erased and then checked again using the VAG1551 scan tool.
