Backrest Cover And Padding (Sport Seat), Removing And Installing







Removing backrest trim

WARNING: Observe relevant safety precautions on models equipped with side airbags.

- Remove seat.
- Remove backrest.
- Insert a screwdriver on one side to pry out rear footwell light; disconnect harness connectors.
- Pull ends of backrest cover fabric - 1 - out from under backrest trim - 4 - in area - 3 -.







- Pry fastening strip for backrest cover (at position - 2 -) out of backrest trim - 4 -.
- Lift up backrest trim - 4 - as far as possible at the bottom, and pry out clips at position - 5 - (2x) with a screwdriver.
- Pull backrest trim - 4 - downward to remove.
- Detach lower backrest cover - 6 -.

Detaching Backrest Cover From Backrest Frame







- Remove head restraint guide Fig. 1.
- Fold backrest cover - 1 - down over backrest frame - 4 -.
- Detach retaining strip - 3 - from wire - 5 -.
- Remove padding - 2 - with cover.

Detaching backrest cover from padding (rear)







- Detach upholstery clips - 3 - from padding - 2 -.
- Pull backrest cover - 1 - through to the front.

- Normal commercial type, as specified by stapler tool manufacturer
- Only use upholstery stapler tool.

Detaching backrest cover from padding (front)







- Lift backrest cover fabric - 4 - and cut through upholstery clips - 1 - (inset - A -).
- Remove backrest heating element - 3 -

Installing
- Use VAG 1634 stapling tool to install new upholstery clips.
- To ease assembly, push back longitudinal rods as far as first transverse rod.
- When installing, staple transverse rods first, then longitudinal rods.
- Remainder of installation is carried out in reverse order of removal.

For greater clarity, head restraint guide - 1 - is shown removed.

- Insert upholstery needle or screwdriver - 3 - with maximum width of 2 mm into hole - 4 - (opposite retaining clip for head restraint guide).
- Pry screwdriver - 3 - in direction of -arrow A-, press retainer tab - 2 - in direction of -arrow B- and pull out head restraint guide - 1 -.
