Electrical/Electronic components and locations

1. multitronic Transmission Control Module -J217-
^ Location; Refer to Fig. 1
^ Control module is checked by On Board Diagnostic (OBD)
2. Hydraulic control assembly
^ Location; Refer to Fig. 2
^ Valves are checked by OBD
3. Shift mechanism cover
4. Tiptronic switch -F1 89-
^ Location: incorporated in printed circuit board, in cover of shift mechanism
^ Consists of 3 Hall sensors, actuated by a magnet on transverse slide of cover panel.
^ If malfunctions occur in Tiptronic switch, first check that magnet installed on transverse slide of cover is properly secured. If necessary, replace cover. Printed circuit board should only be replaced after testing wiring.
5. Shift Lock solenoid -N110-
6. Data Link Connector (DLC)
^ Location; Refer to Fig. 3
7. Cruise control switch -E45-
^ Location; Refer to Fig. 5
8. Park/Neutral Position (PNP) relay -J226-
^ Location; Refer to Fig. 7
9. Voltage supply relay, terminal 87
^ Location; Refer to Fig. 7
10. Transmission Range (TR) Selector Lever display-Y6-
^ If all segments of selector lever position indicator light up together, this indicates a simple malfunction
^ If the selector lever position indicator flashes, this indicates that a serious malfunction has occurred
^ No display indicates faulty wiring or a faulty Transmission Range (TR) Selector Lever Display -Y6-
11. Kickdown switch -F8-
^ Location - Fig. 9 ,
^ On vehicles with gasoline engines a predetermined input value from Throttle Position (TP) sensors -G79-/-G1 85- is stored in Engine Control Module (ECM)
^ Signal is transmitted from ECM to Transmission Control Module (TCM) via CAN bus
12. Brake light switch -F-

Fig. 1 Multitronic Transmission Control Module (TCM) -J217-
Location The multitronic TCM -J217- is installed at the rear end of the transmission, directly onto the hydraulic control assembly.
The following components are integrated in the TCM:
A - Sender for transmission output RPM -G195- and Sender -2- for transmission output RPM -G196-
B - Transmission Fluid Temperature sensor-G93-
C - Transmission Range (TR) Multifunction switch -F125-
D - Sensor for transmission RPM -G182-
E - Sender-1- for hydraulic pressure, automatic transmission -G193-
F - Sender -2- for hydraulic pressure, automatic transmission -G194-

Fig. 2 Hydraulic control assembly

Location: The hydraulic control assembly is bolted to the rear end of the transmission housing. The TCM -J217- is installed directly onto the hydraulic control assembly.
A - Pressure Control Valve 1 for Auto. Transmission -N215-
B - Pressure Control Valve 2 for Auto. Transmission -N216
C - Connector for Solenoid valve 1 -N88-

The hydraulic control assembly contains the following valves (not shown in illustration)
1. Pressure Control Valve 1 for Auto. Transmission -N215-, Solenoid valve for activating the clutch control valve
2. Pressure Control Valve 2 for Auto. Transmission -N216-, Solenoid valve for activating the gear ratio valve
3. Solenoid valve 1 -N88-, Activates the clutch cooling valve and the safety shut-off valve.
4. Clutch cooling valve
5. Minimum pressure valve
6. Pressure limiting valve
7. Clutch control valve
8. Pilot pressure control valve
A detailed description of each valve and information about its function may be found in the following Self-Study Program:
-> Self-Study Program 951103, Variable Automatic Transmission multitronic 01J

Fig. 3 Shift Lock solenoid -N110-
Location the shift lock solenoid is located in the shift mechanism (arrow).

Fig. 4 Data Link Connector (DLC)
Location: below knee padding on left side of steering wheel

Fig. 5 Cruise Control switch -E45-
Location Cruise control switch is located on steering column switch.

Fig. 6 Transmission Range (TR) Selector lever display -Y6-

Location: incorporated in instrument cluster

Note: The selector lever display can only replaced together with the instrument cluster.

Fig. 7 Voltage supply relay (terminal 87) and Park/Neutral Position (PNP) relay -J226-

Location: on relay carrier in electronics box in plenum chamber
3. Voltage supply relay (terminal 87)
The voltage supply via terminal 87 is different for different engine versions
^ via Ignition Time Delay relay -J64- on vehicles with 2.4 litre engine
^ via Motronic Engine Control Module power supply relay -J271- for all other gasoline engine versions
4. Park/Neutral Position (PNP) relay -J226

Fig. 8 Brake light switch -F-

Location: Brake light switch (arrow) is located on pedal cluster.

Note: To ensure a secure installation, the switch may be installed only once.

Fig. 9 Kickdown switch -F8-
Location
On vehicles with gasoline engine a predetermined input value from Throttle Position (TP) sensors -G79-/-Gl85- is stored in the ECM.
