Hub carrier/wheel bearing housing, removing and installing

Special tools and equipment





^ VW 637/2 Hub cap remover





^ 3241/4 Fitting sleeve

Removing
- Pry hub cap off disc wheel / if necessary pull off using suction cup -3208-.

Front wheel drive vehicles

Note: If you do not intend to replace wheel bearing unit, do not remove collared nut and dust cap.

- Remove wheel.





- Remove dust cap from seat by gently knocking catch.





- Pry off dust cap.
- Install wheel and lower vehicle to stand on wheels.





Further procedure for all vehicles
- Loosen collared bolt -arrow- only 90° as otherwise wheel bearing will be damaged.

WARNING!: Vehicle must be standing on its wheels when loosening and tightening collared bolt.

-Danger of accident-


- Remove wheel.
- Secure brake disc with wheel bolt.





- Unscrew brake caliper -arrows-.
For this use Allen key extension T40047.

Note:
^ Use binding wire to attach brake caliper to body.
^ Never leave brake caliper hanging from brake hose.

- Remove brake disc.
- Remove coil spring.





- Unscrew collared bolt -1-.
- Unbolt splash plate -3-.

Front wheel drive vehicles
- Remove wheel bearing unit -2-.





Further procedure for all vehicles
- Unbolt speed sensor -2-.
- Mark position of eccentric bolt -1- on top of hub carrier/wheel bearing housing.
- Unfasten bolted joints.
Sequence: item 5, item 3, item 4, item 1
- Remove hub carrier or wheel bearing housing.

Note: Pry off carefully in case of all wheel drive vehicles.

Installing
Pay particular attention to the following on installation:
Note: Replacing bolts and self-locking nuts.

Front wheel drive vehicles
- Install a new wheel bearing unit.





Further procedure for all vehicles
- Initially tighten bolts -1-, -3-, -4-, -5- to 20 Nm only.
- Tighten bolts of speed sensor -2- to 10 Nm.
- Bolt splash plate and brake caliper to hub carrier or wheel bearing housing. C38; Servicing brake caliper





- Initially tighten collared bolt -1- to 190 Nm (give further 1/2 turn when vehicle is on the ground).
- Installing coil spring.





- Proceed as follows to tighten bolted joints -1-, -3-, -4- and -5-:
- Lower vehicle onto wheels and loosen bolted joints.
- Bounce vehicle several times.
- Tighten bolts.
Tightening torques:
Item 1: 95 Nm (bring eccentric bolt into marked position)
Items 3 and 4: 85 Nm plus additional 90° turn
Item 5: 160 Nm plus additional 90° turn
- Turn collared nut additional 180°.

Front wheel drive vehicles
- Remove wheel.





- Drive in a new dust cap.

Note:
^ Always replace damaged (dented) dust caps.
^ Damaged (badly dented) dust caps allow moisture to penetrate. For this reason, you must use the tool illustrated here.

Further procedure for all vehicles
- Check wheel alignment.
