Service

Instrument clusters are illuminated differently, depending on Model and Model Year (MY) as follows:

MY 2000 and 2001

Cluster illuminates when switching ignition
ON:

S6, S8, A8 and TT (up to VIN: 8N_Y1049999)

Cluster illuminates when switching vehicle lights
ON:

A4, A6, allroad and TT (from VIN:
8N_Y1050000)

MY 2002 and 2003

When switching ignition ON:

A4 (from VIN: BE_2A023681), A6, allroad, TT
and Cabrio - needle pointers are illuminated
immediately.

S4, S4 Avant, S6, S6 Avant, A8 and SB, - needles and scales are illuminated immediately.

When switching vehicle lights ON:

A4 to VIN: 8E_2A023680, the needles and scales are illuminated immediately.

A8 models are equipped with an internal phototransistor that will dim or brighten the illumination of the gauges needles and scales.

^ During daylight hours gauge illumination will be brighter.

^ As light is diminished (i.e. driver enters a tunnel) the gauge illumination will be dimmer. This requires the driver to switch on the headlights to see the gauges. This in turn ensures that the headlights are on in conditions of low visibility.
