Supersedes Technical Service Bulletin Group 57 number 08-20 dated December 9, 2008 for reasons listed below.
Affected Vehicles
Condition
This technical bulletin will cover the remote transmitter (Figure 1) part of the key Fob only.
The remote transmitter may exhibit one or more of the following concerns:
- One or more remote transmitter buttons are not functioning.
- Operating range of remote transmitter is shorter than expected.
- Remote transmitter has intermittent operational concerns.
- Remote transmitter is inoperative.
Terminology Definition
Adaptation to Convenience System Central Control Module
Adaptation of the remote transmitter is the first step to activating the convenience functionality (i.e. lock / unlock, memory seats) of the key Fob. This can only be done via Diagnostic tool VAS 5051/5052. When adapting a remote transmitter, it will automatically be synchronized. During adaptation of the remote transmitter, the following occurs:
^ The convenience system central control module writes an association into the remote transmitter. This association identifies each individual remote transmitter.
^ The convenience system central control module simultaneously learns the individual remote transmitters fixed code.
Adaptation of a remote transmitter may only be lost if a non-adapted remote transmitter is adapted to a position that an existing remote transmitter is already adapted to. There are 4 possible positions available.
When adapting a remote transmitter to a position where an existing remote transmitter already is adapted, the adaptation of the existing remote will be erased.
Synchronization
A remote transmitter must be adapted before it can be synchronized.
Diagnostic tool VAS 5051/5052 is not necessary to synchronize a remote transmitter.
Only a synchronized remote transmitter will operate the door locks.
Synchronization of the remote transmitter is a security feature. There is a variable code in both the convenience system central control module and in the remote transmitter. When synchronization occurs the variable codes between the two components are aligned.
A remote transmitter will lose its synchronization if the vehicle battery or remote transmitter battery are replaced or are low on power.
Loss of remote transmitter synchronization will not affect the adaptation of the remote transmitter.

Service
Adaptation to Convenience System Central Control Module
Refer to "Guided Fault Finding" or "Guided Functions" in the VAS 5051/5052.
Synchronization 2002, 2003 & 2004 up to VIN WAU...09999
The following procedure must be completed within 1 minute.
^ Press lock or unlock button on remote transmitter once.
^ Lock or Unlock drivers door using key. Remote transmitter is now synchronized.
^ Check remote transmitter function by pressing lock or unlock button.
2004 from VIN WAU...10000 and 2005 up to WAU... 399999
The following procedure must be completed within 1 minute.
^ Insert ignition key into ignition lock.
^ Switch ignition to on position, then back to off position.
^ Remove ignition key from ignition lock.
^ Press lock or unlock button on remote transmitter. Remote transmitter is now synchronized.
^ Check remote transmitter function by pressing lock or unlock button.
Diagnosis
^ Verify customer concern. Does remote transmitter function properly?
^ Connect VAS 5051/5052 Diagnostic tool.
^ Switch ignition on.
^ From Start-up screen, select Vehicle Self-Diagnosis >> 46-Convenience system central module >> 004 - DTC memory content.
If DTC(s) 09955, 09956, 09957 and/or 09958 are present, one or more remote transmitter(s) may have lost synchronization.
^ Record DTC(s) and continue with diagnosis.
^ Return to Select function screen.
^ Select function 011 - Measured values >> Display group 7 >> Input Q to confirm.
^ Press all remote transmitter buttons while watching fields 1 and 2. Refer to table for diagnostic guidelines.
