Campaign - Air Bag Replacement: Overview

Replace Air Bag Unit

(Supersedes LN Recall Circular Dated Oct. 2002)

Work Procedure

Overview: This procedure describes removal and replacement of the air bag for the 3-spoke steering wheel on 2003 model year Audi A4/A6 vehicles.





Parts

Work Sequence
- Obtain the anti-theft radio security code
- Turn ignition switch to the "Off" position
- Open hood and disconnect ground cable (GND) from the negative (-) battery terminal

CAUTION: ON VEHICLES EQUIPPED WITH AUDI TELEMATICS BY ONSTAR, SWITCH-OFF THE EMERGENCY (BACKUP) BATTERY FOR THE TELEMATIC/TELEPHONE CONTROL MODULE PRIOR TO DISCONNECTING VEHICLE BATTERY

WARNING: Observe all safety precautions before starting work on any part of the air bag system





- Unlock steering column lock

- Pull steering wheel -5- as far out and up as possible

- Lock steering column in position
- Turn steering wheel to a vertical position

- Remove Torx bolt T 30 -3-
- Turn steering wheel back one half-turn and remove the second Torx bolt T30 -3-
- Disconnect connector for air bag unit -2-
- Carefully remove air bag unit -7- and place on appropriate surface with impact padding facing upward
- Obtain new air bag unit 8E0 880 201T or 8E0 880 201S, place on steering wheel and connect electrical connector -2-

NOTE: Make sure connector and securing clip completely engage







IMPORTANT: Make sure no cable/wire lies upon the gas generator. Make sure that the air bag cable is not pinched. Route air bag cable to the left in a loop.

- Secure air bag unit to steering wheel with Torx bolt T30 -3- and hand tighten
- Turn steering wheel back one half-turn, secure air bag to steering wheel with second Torx bolt T 30 -3- and tighten to 7 Nm (58 in. lbs.)

- Turn steering wheel back one half-turn and tighten other Torx bolt T30 -3- to 7 Nm (58 in. lbs.)
- Turn ignition switch to the "ON" position
- Reconnect ground cable (GND) to the negative (-) battery terminal and torque bolt to 5 Nm (44 in. lbs.)

WARNING: Make certain that no one is inside the vehicle when connecting the battery ground cable

- After reconnecting vehicle battery on vehicles equipped with Audi Telematics by OnStar, switch on the emergency (back-up) battery for the Telematic/Telephone Control Module

NOTE: If air bag Malfunction Indicator Lamp (MIL) K75 signals a malfunction after installation, DTC memory must be interrogated, erased and once again interrogated using VAS5051 tester.

- Activate radio with radio code
- Set time on clock
- Set one-touch power window feature

Parts Return
It is imperative that the removed complete air bag unit is not deflated. It must be properly identified and placed in the box, which contained the replacement unit and temporarily stored for further instructions.
