Torsion differential housing, removing and installing
CAUTION: Before beginning repairs on the electrical system:
^ Obtain the anti-theft radio security code.
^ Switch the ignition off.
^ Disconnect the battery Ground (GND) strap.
^ On vehicles equipped with Audi Telematics by OnStar (R) switch-off the emergency (backup) battery for the Telematic/Telephone Control Module prior to disconnecting vehicle battery go to Repair Information.
^ After reconnecting vehicle battery, re-code and check operation of anti-theft radio. Also check operation of clock and power windows according to Repair Manual and/or Owner's Manual.
^ After reconnecting vehicle battery on vehicles equipped with Audi Telematics by OnStar (R) switch-on the emergency (backup) battery for the Telematic/Telephone Control Module go to Repair Manual Communication.
^ Transmission installed
Special tools, testers and other items required
^ Drip tray V.A.G 1306
^ V.A.G 1383 A Engine-/transmission lifter
Removing
- Heed (if necessary obtain) radio code for vehicles with encoded radio.
- Disconnect battery Ground strap with ignition switched off.
- Place drip tray VAG 1306 underneath and drain gear oil.
Vehicles with 4-cylinder engine
- Separate exhaust system at clamp -1
- Unscrew heat shield for drive shaft from Torsion differential housing -arrows-.
- Unscrew drive shaft from transmission.
Drive shaft, removing and installing.
- Re-insert speed nut -arrow- slightly and secure drive shaft to stud with wire.
- Support transmission slightly with engine/transmission lifter VAG 1383 A.
- First screw out bolts -2-, then bolts -3- on tunnel crossmember.
- Lower engine/transmission lifter VAG 1383 A
- Unscrew two nuts A- and remove tunnel crossmember.
- Remove transmission mount -arrows-.
- Unscrew Torsion differential housing -A- from transmission cover -B-.

- Remove spring -C- from pinion.

Servicing housing
Installing
Install in reverse order, paying attention to the following:
- Clean sealing surface and coat with AMV 188 00102.
- Check whether dowel sleeves for housing -A- (arrows) are present in transmission cover -B-.
- Place spring -C- over pinion on hollow shaft.
- Lift transmission with engine/transmission lifter VAG 1383 A.
- Install transmission mount.
- Screw tunnel crossmember onto transmission mount -4- and body -2and -3-.
- pop up gear oil and check oil level in manual transmission.
- Screw drive shaft to transmission. Drive shaft, removing and installing.
- Align exhaust system stress-free
- After connecting battery, enter radio anti-theft code.

- Connect battery.
^ On re-connecting battery, remember to check and activate vehicle equipment (radio, clock, convenience electric etc.).
