Airbag Unit (Standard Steering Wheel), Assembly Overview

WARNING: Observe safety precautions for working on airbags.







1 - Torx bolts T30 (2x)
- Tightening torque: 7 Nm
2 - Steering wheel
3 - Connector for spiral spring
4 - Connector for airbag unit
5 - Airbag unit

- Removal
- Disconnect battery Ground (GND) strap.
- Turn steering wheel one half turn until both Torx bolts -1- are accessible.
- Unlatch steering column adjustment lever.
- Pull steering wheel -2- as far out and down as possible.
- Loosen both Torx bolts T30 -1-sufficiently to remove the airbag.
- Disconnect connector for airbag unit -4-.
- Disconnect connector for horn -6-.
- Place airbag unit -5- on appropriate surface with impact padding facing up.
- Installing
- Installation is the reverse of removal.
- Make sure connector and securing clip completely engage (audible).
- Ensure no cable/wire lies upon or is stuck behind the gas generator, which is located on the rear of -7-, when installing.
- Make sure that the airbag cable is not pinched. Route airbag cable to the left in a loop.
- Route horn cable outside in a loop.
- Tighten bolts -1- (2x) to a tightening torque of 7 Nm.
- Switch ignition on.

WARNING: No person may be inside the vehicle when connecting the battery.

- Connect battery Ground (GND) strap.

7 - Socket-head bolt

- Tightening torque 50 Nm
8 - Connector for steering wheel heater

9 - Airbag Spiral Spring/Return Spring With Slip Ring -F138-

NOTE:
- Observe safety precautions after connecting the battery.
- If Airbag Malfunction Indicator Lamp (MIL) -K75- signals a malfunction after installation, DTC memory must be interrogated, erased and once again interrogated using VAS 5051 tester.
