Harness Connectors Between the Transmission Control Module (TCM) and Transmission, Checking

Harness connectors between the Transmission Control Module (TCM) and transmission, checking
Perform this test if the control element diagnosis or the electrical test points to problems between the transmission and Transmission Control Module (TCM) -J217-.

Test procedure
- Remove Transmission Control Module (TCM) and separate multiple connector .

- Connect VAG 1598/20 test box to control module wiring harness.

- Remove sound deadening -arrows-.

Checking harness connectors to the 16-pin connector at the transmission

- Unscrew retainer -1- for sound deadening.
- Rotate locking lever -3- and remove connector for transmission wiring harness.

- Connect Multimeter to make a resistance measurement between terminals of 16-pin connector and cavities of test box VAG 1598/20, as described in following chart.
^ Specified value always less than 1.5 Ohms

Note:
^ In the event of deviations from the specified value, repair open circuit following wiring diagram and check connector for corroded terminals, water entry and leakage.
^ If this test revealed no unacceptable deviations, the wiring harness in the transmission must be tested.

^ Only if the wiring harness in the transmission is O.K. should the appropriate solenoids or pressure control valves be replaced.

Multi-function Transmission Range (TR) Switch -F125-, checking

Note:
^ Before performing the electrical test on the Multi-function Transmission Range (TR) Switch, you must first check the Measured Value Block for the Multi-Function switch display ground number 004
^ Make sure that the selector lever cable is correctly adjusted.

1. Functional Test

- Disconnect connector -arrow- for Multi-function Transmission Range (TR) Switch -F125- at front left of transmission.

Terminal Pinout at the connector for Multi-function Transmission Range (TR) Switch -F125-.

2. Check power supply to Multi-function TR switch

- Attach Multimeter for a voltage measurement between following terminals of 10-pin connector.

- Switch ignition ON.

If a specified value is not reached:
- Repair open circuit or short circuit as necessary.
Refer to Wiring Diagrams, Electrical Troubleshooting and Component Locations.

3. Check wiring connection between 10-pin connector for multi-function switch and Transmission Control Module (TCM)
- Remove Transmission Control Module (TCM) and separate multiple connector.

- Connector VAG 1598/20 test box to control module wiring harness.

- Connect multimeter to make a resistance measurement between terminals of 10-pin connector and cavities of test box VAG 1598/20, as described in following chart:

Note:
^ In the event of deviations from the specified value, repair open circuit following wiring diagram and check connector for corroded terminals, water entry and leakage.
^ If this test revealed no unacceptable deviations, Multi-function Transmission Range Switch -F125- must be replaced.

Starter Interlock Alarm System Relay -J60-, checking
- Remove Transmission Control Module (TCM) and place it to one side with connector still attached.
- Turn ignition key to Start position.
- Move selector lever from S to P and back.

^ It must be possible both to hear and feel the Starter Interlock Alarm System Relay -J60- (in the relay carrier plenum panel E-box, pin location 4) engage
^ As long as no malfunction is present, the starter can be operated with the selector lever in position N or P

If the relay does not engage:
- Check Starter Interlock Alarm System Relay -J60- .

If the relay engages but the starter does not turn:
- Check wiring connections from Starter Interlock Alarm System Relay J60- to starter terminal 50 following wiring diagram, or check starter respectively.

Check power supply to Starter Interlock Alarm System Relay -J60-

- Disconnect Starter Interlock Alarm System Relay -J60-.
- Connect V.A.G 1527 B voltage tester as follows:
- Turn ignition key to Start position.
^ LED must illuminate each time

If the LED does not illuminate:
- Repair open circuit or short circuit as necessary.
Refer to Wiring Diagrams, Electrical Troubleshooting and Component Locations.

Check activation of Starter Interlock Alarm System Relay -J60-

- Connect V.A.G 1527 B voltage tester as follows:
- Move selector lever from S to P and back.
^ With the selector lever in N or P the LED must illuminate, but not in other selector lever positions

If the LED does not illuminate:
- Check adjustment of selector lever cable.
go to, 5 Spd. Automatic Transmission 01V.
- Check Multi-function Transmission Range (TR) Switch -F125-.
- Repair open circuit or short circuit as necessary.
Refer to Wiring Diagrams, Electrical Troubleshooting and Component Locations.
