Compression Check: Testing and Inspection

Special tools and equipment





^ Spark plug wrench 3122 B





^ Compression tester V.A.G 1763

Test requirements:
^ Engine oil temperature not less than 30°C
^ Battery voltage not less than 12.7 Volts

Test sequence

Note: All cable ties opened or cut during engine removal must be reinstalled at the same locations during installation.

- Remove air filter housing.





- Remove bolts -1- to -3-.
- Disconnect hose for right crankshaft housing ventilation at position indicated by (arrow).

Note: Disregard -item 4-.

- Remove pressure regulator valve and disconnect hose for crankshaft housing ventilation at left cylinder head.





- Unplug electrical connectors on both sides from:
1 - Injectors -N30-... -N86- (8x)
2 - Ignition coils -N-... -N191- (8x)
- Remove ignition coils.
- Remove spark plugs with spark plug wrench 3122B.

CAUTION: Remove foam pads installed during air filter housing removal procedure prior to performing compression test.

- Fully open throttle valve.
- Check compressions with compression tester V.A.G 1763.

Note: Using compression tester

- Operate starter until tester shows no further pressure increase.

Installation is carries out in reverse sequence - not following points:

Note: During installation, all cable ties must be reinstalled at the same locations.

- Install air filter housing.

Perform following step after checking compressions
- Check fault memory and erase if necessary.

For this step use vehicle diagnostic, testing and information system VAS 5051.
