Ignition System: Service Precautions

Safety precautions

Observe the following so as to avoid possible injury and/or damage to the injection and ignition system:
- After disassembling the air cleaner housing, make sure nothing drops into the open turbocharger intake connections or cover them over for protection.
- Never touch/disconnect ignition cables with the engine running or at cranking speed.
- Always switch off the ignition before disconnecting and connecting the battery so as not to damage the engine control module.
- Always switch off the ignition before disconnecting and connecting the injection and ignition system wires (also applies to measuring instrument leads).
- If the engine is to be operated at cranking speed without it starting (e.g. compression test), disconnect the connectors from the output stages for ignition coils and from the injectors. Interrogate and erase fault memory on completion of work.
- Always switch off the ignition before washing the engine.
