Connecting VAG 1551 Scan Tool



V.A.G 1551 Scan Tool, connecting and selecting engine control module
Test conditions


- Fuse for engine electronics OK.
- Fuel pump relay OK
- Battery voltage at least 11 V
- Ground connections on engine and transmission OK.
- Switch ignition off.







- Connect V.A.G 1551 Scan Tool with diagnostic adapter V.A.G 1551/3A.

In the automatic test sequence function (address word 00), the K-wire adapter VAS 6017 must also be used on vehicles as of model year 2002.

NOTE: The Data Link Connector (DLC) is located in below the instrument panel to the left of the steering column.

WARNING:
- When driving the vehicle for measurement and test purposes, always secure the VAS 1551 Scan Tool on the rear seat only and operate it from this position (Second person required).
- Observe the safety precautions.


NOTE: The following describes On Board Diagnostic (OBD) using the V.A.G 1551 Scan Tool only.

- If no display appears, check diagnostic wires:

Depending on the function required:

- Switch ignition on.
or
Start engine, "Selectable functions" table.
- Switch on printer using Print button (Warning lamp in switch illuminates).
- Press key 1 for "Rapid data transfer".

- Press keys 0 and 1 for address word "Engine electronics" and press the Q key to confirm entry.

The display on V.A.G 1551 Scan Tool shows the control module identification code e.g.:


4B0907558.. 4.2l V8/5V G D.. ->
Code 11752 WSC 06388



- 4B0907558... Control module number (current control module version - see Parts list)
- 4.2 L Engine capacity
- V8 / 5V Type of engine (V engine, 8-cyl., 5-valve)
- G "G" appears in vehicles with cruise control system
- D... Control module software version
- Code 11752 Coding of engine control module.

- WSC 06388 Workshop Code from V.A.G 1551 which was used to perform the last coding

NOTE:
- Incorrect coding may lead to higher emissions and increased strain on the automatic transmission resulting from harsh gearshift jolts.
- A wrong coding also leads to storing of nonexistent DTCs in the DTC memory.

If the coding differs from the vehicle version, then:

- Check engine control module coding, code engine control module.
- Press key.
