Output Diagnostic Test Mode (DTM)

NOTE:
- The output Diagnostic Test Mode (DTM) can only be performed with the engine stopped and the ignition switched on.
- The output Diagnostic Test Mode (DTM) is terminated if the engine is started or if an engine speed pulse is detected.
- During the output Diagnostic Test Mode (DTM) the individual control elements are actuated (approx. 1 minute) the program can be advanced to the next control element by pressing the key.
- The control elements can be checked acoustically or by way of touch. The electric fuel pump runs throughout the output DTM.
- Engine must be started before repeating the output Diagnostic Test Mode (DTM). (Engine control module must have recognized a speed greater than 300 rpm.)

The output Diagnostic Test Mode (DTM) activates the following components in the stated order:

1. Evaporative emission (EVAP) canister purge regulator valve -N80-
2. Secondary air injection (AIR) solenoid valve - N112-
3. Secondary air injection (AIR) pump relay - J299-
4. Intake manifold change-over valve -N156-
5. Camshaft timing control, bank 2
6. Intake manifold tuning (IMT) valve -N261- The following text is displayed in S6 models: Intake air switch-over valve -N335-
7. Engine mounting 1 left (in direction of travel)
8. Engine mounting 2 right (in direction of travel)
9. Camshaft timing control, bank 1
10. Cylinder 1 Fuel Injector -N30-
11. Cylinder 5 Fuel Injector -N83-
12. Cylinder 4 Fuel Injector -N33-
13. Cylinder 8 Fuel Injector -N86-
14. Cylinder 6 Fuel Injector -N84-
15. Cylinder 3 Fuel Injector -N32-
16. Cylinder 7 Fuel Injector -N85-
17. Cylinder 2 Fuel Injector -N31-

Test conditions
- Fuses for engine electronics OK
- Fuel pump relay OK.

- Connect Vehicle Diagnostic, Testing and Information System VAS 5051 or V.A.G 1551 Scan Tool and select engine electronics control unit with "Address word" 01. For this purpose, ignition must be switched on.

- Confirm input with Q key.

Actuating Evaporative emission (EVAP) canister purge regulator valve -N80-

- Press key.

Indicated on display


Output Diagnostic Test Mode ->
EVAP canister purge regulator valve -N80-


Valve will continue to be actuated (clicks) until key is pressed to switch to next control element.

If the solenoid valve is not actuated (does not click).

Actuating Secondary Air Injection (AIR) solenoid valve -N112-

- Press ->key.

Indicated on display


Output Diagnostic Test Mode ->
Secondary air injection valve -N112-


Solenoid valve will continue to be actuated (clicks) until key is pressed to switch to next control element.

If the secondary air inlet valve does not click:
- Check secondary air injection (AIR) solenoid valve -N112-. Secondary Air Injection (AIR) Solenoid Valve -N112-, Checking

Actuating Secondary Air Injection (AIR) pump relay -J299-

- Press ->key.

Indicated on display


Output Diagnostic Test Mode ->
Secondary air injection pump relay -J299-


Secondary air injection (AIR) pump relay -J299- actuates secondary air injection pump motor -V101-. This runs in intervals.

If the secondary air injection (AIR) pump motor -V101- does not run in intervals:

- Check secondary air injection (AIR) pump relay -J299- (in electronic box of plenum chamber). Secondary Air Injection (AIR) Pump Relay -J299, Checking

Actuating Intake manifold change-over valve -N156-

- Press ->key.

Indicated on display


Output Diagnostic Test Mode ->
Intake manifold change-over valve -N156-


The valve must click.

If the valve is not actuated (does not click).

Bank 2, actuating valve for camshaft adjustment

- Press ->key.

Indicated on display:


Output Diagnostic Test Mode ->
Bank 2, camshaft adjustment


Valve 2 for camshaft adjustment -N208- is actuated for approx. 1 minute (click).

If the valve 2 is not actuated (the valve does not click):

- Check valve for camshaft adjustment.

Actuating Leak Detection Pump (LDP) -V144- of tank ventilation system

- Press ->key.

Indicated on display


Output Diagnostic Test Mode ->
Leak Detection Pump tank vent. syst.


Change-over valve in LDP is activated for approximately 1 minute (clicks), unless button is pressed first to switch to next actuator.

NOTE: The click can be heard by listening near the left rear wheelhousing.
If the valve is not actuated (does not click):

Intake Manifold Tuning (IMT) valve 2 -N261- (A6 models)

Intake air switch-over valve -N335- (S6 models)

- Press ->key.

Indicated on display: in A6 models


Output Diagnostic Test Mode ->
Intake manifold tuning valve 2 -N261-


Indicated on display: in S6 models


Output Diagnostic Test Mode ->
Intake air switch-over valve -N335-


Solenoid valve must click.

If the solenoid valve is not actuated (does not click).
- Check intake manifold tuning valve 2 -N261-. Intake Manifold Change-Over, Checking

Checking left and right engine mountings

- Press ->key.

Indicated on display


Output Diagnostic Test Mode ->
Left Engine Mount Solenoid Valve -N144-


If the solenoid valve is not actuated (does not click).
- Check engine mounting. Testing and Inspection
- Press key.

Indicated on display

Output Diagnostic Test Mode ->
Right Engine Mount Solenoid Valve -N145-

If the solenoid valve is not actuated (does not click).

- Check engine mounting. Testing and Inspection

Bank 1, actuating valve for camshaft adjustment

- Press ->key.

Output Diagnostic Test Mode ->
Bank 1, camshaft adjustment

Valve 1 for camshaft adjustment -N205- is actuated for approx. 1 minute (click).

If the valve 1 is not actuated (the valve does not click):
- Check valve for camshaft adjustment.

Actuating injectors

NOTE: The injectors are activated according to the firing sequence, i.e. cyl. 1, cyl. 5, cyl. 4, cyl. 8, cyl. 6, cyl. 3, cyl. 7, cyl. 2.

- Press ->key.

- Press ->key.

After arrow key is pressed, injector must click five times.

If the injector does not click:

- Press key.

If the injector does not click:
- Test injectors. Injectors, Checking
- Press ->key.
