Output Diagnostic Test Mode (DTM)




Output Diagnostic Test Mode (DTM) (Function 03)


NOTE:
- Output Diagnostic Test Mode (DTM) is only possible with the engine not running and ignition switched ON.
- Output Diagnostic Test Mode (DTM) is aborted if engine is started or an RPM signal is recognized.
- During output Diagnostic Test Mode (DTM), the Individual actuators are activated (approx. 1 minute), or until the next actuator is selected by pressing the button.
- Actuators are checked either acoustically or by touch.
- The electric Fuel Pump (FP) runs during all of output Diagnostic Test Mode (DTM).
- Engine must be started before repeating output Diagnostic Test Mode (DTM). (ECM must recognize an engine speed of above 300 RPM).


Output Diagnostic Test Mode (DTM) activates the following components in the specified sequence:
1. Evaporative Emission (EVAP) canister purge regulator valve -N80- (tank ventilation valve)
2. Secondary Air Injection (AIR) solenoid valve -N112-
3. Secondary Air Injection (AIR) pump relay - J299-
4. Intake manifold change-over valve -N156-
5. Bank 2 camshaft adjustment
6. Leak Detection Pump (LDP) -V144-
7. Intake manifold tuning (IMT) valve -2- - N261- (not applicable to S8 vehicles)
8. Engine mount 1 at left (direction of travel)
9. Engine mount 2 at right (direction of travel)
10. Bank 1 camshaft adjustment
11. Cylinder 1 fuel injector -N30-
12. Cylinder 5 fuel injector -N83-
13. Cylinder 4 fuel injector -N33-
14. Cylinder 8 fuel injector -N86-
15. Cylinder 6 fuel injector -N84-
16. Cylinder 3 fuel injector -N32-
17. Cylinder 7 fuel injector -N85-
18. Cylinder 2 fuel injector -N31-

Test requirements
- Fuses for engine electronics OK
- Fuel Pump (FP) relay OK
- Connect VAS5051 tester or VAG1551 scan tool and select control module for engine electronics using "address word" 01. Ignition must remain switched ON for this.

- Press -Q- button to confirm input.

Evaporative Emission (EVAP) canister purge regulator valve -N80- (tank ventilation valve), activating

- Press -> button.

Indicated on display:


Output Diagnostic Test Mode (DTM) ->
EVAP canister purge regulator valve -N80-



This solenoid valve is activated (clicks) until button is pressed to switch to the next actuator.

If the solenoid valve is not activated (does not click):
- Check Evaporative Emission (EVAP) canister purge regulator valve -N80-.

Activating secondary Air Injection (AIR) solenoid valve -N112-

- Press -> button.

Indicated on display:


Output Diagnostic Test Mode (DTM) ->
Secondary Air Injection solenoid valve -N112-



This solenoid valve is activated (clicks) until button is pressed to switch to the next actuator.

If the Secondary Air Injection (AIR) solenoid valve does not click:
- Check Secondary Air Injection (AIR) solenoid valve -N112-.

Activating secondary Air Injection (AIR) pump relay -J299-
- Press -> button.

Indicated on display:


Output Diagnostic Test Mode (DTM) ->
Secondary Air Injection pump relay -J299-



The Secondary Air Injection (AIR) pump relay -J299- activates the Secondary Air Injection (AIR) pump motor -V101-. It runs in intervals.

If the Secondary Air Injection (AIR) pump motor -V101- does not run in intervals:
- Check Secondary Air Injection (AIR) Pump Relay -J299- (in E-box, in plenum chamber, right side).

Intake manifold change-over valve -N156-, activating

- Press -> button.

Indicated on display:

Intake manifold change-over valve -N156-



Solenoid valve must click.

If the solenoid valve is not activated (does not click)::.
- Check intake manifold change-over valve -N156-.

Activating camshaft adjustment valve, bank 2
- Press -> button.

Indicated on display:


Output Diagnostic Test Mode (DTM) ->
Bank 2, camshaft adjustment



- Valve -2- for camshaft adjustment -N208- is activated for approx. 1 minute (clicking).

If solenoid valve 2 is not activated (solenoid valve does not click):
- Check solenoid valves for camshaft adjustment.

Leak Detection Pump (LDP) -V144- (LDP for tank ventilation system), activating
- Press -> button.

Indicated on display:


Output Diagnostic Test Mode (DTM) ->
Leak Detection Pump tank ventilation system



The change-over valve in the LDP is activated for approximately 1 minute (clicks), unless button is pressed first to switch to the next actuator.


NOTE: The click can be heard by listening near the rear left wheelhousing.


If valve is not activated (does not click):

Activating intake manifold tuning (IMT) valve -2- -N261- (test does not apply to S8 vehicles)

- Press -> button.

Indicated on display:

Intake manifold tuning (IMT) valve -2- -N261-



Solenoid valve must click.

If the solenoid valve is not activated (does not click):.

- Intake manifold tuning (IMT) valve -2- -N261-, checking

Checking left and right engine mount
- Press -> button.

Indicated on display:


Output Diagnostic Test Mode (DTM) ->
Left elct-hydrlic engn mnt solnd vlve -N144-



If the solenoid valve is not activated (does not click):.
- Check engine mount.
- Press -> button.

Indicated on display:

Right elct-hydrlic engn mnt solnd vlve -N145-



If the solenoid valve is not activated (does not click):.
- Check engine mount.

Activating camshaft adjustment valve, bank 1
- Press -> button.

Indicated on display:


Output Diagnostic Test Mode (DTM) ->
Bank 1, camshaft adjustment



- Valve -1- for camshaft adjustment -N205- is activated for approx. 1 minute (clicking).

If solenoid valve 1 is not activated (solenoid valve does not click):
- Check solenoid valves for camshaft adjustment.

Activating fuel injectors


NOTE: Fuel injectors are activated in ignition sequence, i.e. cyl.1, cyl.5, cyl.4, cyl.8, cyl.6, cyl.3, cyl.7, cyl.2.


- Press -> button.

Indicated on display:


Output Diagnostic Test Mode (DTM) ->
Cylinder 1 fuel injector -N30-



- Press -> button.

After pressing arrow button, injector must click five times.

Indicated on display:

If injector does not click:
- Check fuel injectors.
- Press -> button.

Indicated on display:

Cylinder 5 fuel injector -N83-



- Press -> button.

After pressing arrow button, injector must click five times.

Indicated on display:

Cylinder 5 fuel injector -N83-



If injector does not click:
- Check fuel injectors.
- Press -> button.

Indicated on display:

Cylinder 4 fuel injector -N33-



- Press -> button.

After pressing arrow button, injector must click five times.

If injector does not click:
- Check fuel injectors.
- Press -> button.

Indicated on display:

Cylinder 8 fuel injector -N86-



- Press -> button.

After pressing arrow button, injector must click five times.

If injector does not click:
- Check fuel injectors.
- Press -> button.

Cylinder 6 fuel injector -N84-



- Press -> button.

After pressing arrow button, injector must click five times.

If injector does not click:
- Check fuel injectors.
- Press -> button.

- Press -> button.

After pressing arrow button, injector must click five times.

If injector does not click:
- Check fuel injectors.
- Press -> button.

Cylinder 7 fuel injector -N85-



- Press -> button.

After pressing arrow button, injector must click five times.

If injector does not click:
- Check fuel injectors.
- Press -> button.

- Press -> button.

After pressing arrow button, injector must click five times.

If injector does not click:
- Check fuel injectors.
- Press -> button.

NOTE: Output Diagnostic Test Mode (DTM) cannot be re-initiated until engine is started and ignition switched off and then on again.
