Wheel Bearing: Service and Repair

Wheel bearing, pressing in and out with wheel bearing housing installed (all wheel drive)

^ VAG 1383 A Engine/transmission lifter with universal transmission support VAG 1359/2





^ VAG 1389 A/1 Foot pump with high-pressure hose

Note:
^ If hand pump VAG 1389/1 is available, it can be converted to a foot pump.
^ Use conversion kit VAG 1389/3 for this purpose.

^ Hollow piston cylinder HKZ-15 with hydraulic pressure piece E-O204-T
^ Tie bolt E-0-217+218
^ Special nut E-8-214

^ Thrust sleeve E-44-1

- Remove drive axle.
- Position transmission lifter VAG 1383/A under engine/transmission (danger of accident due to parts falling out when wheel hub and wheel bearing are removed).





Pulling out wheel hub
- Install bell -1-, hollow piston cylinder -2- with tie bolt and special nut -3-.
- Pull out hub by actuating pump, holding device fast.

Pulling out wheel bearing
- Install pressure piece -1- with collar facing bearing, thrust sleeve -2- with four-step ID facing wheel bearing housing and hollow piston cylinder -3- with tie bolt and special nut -4-.
- Pull out wheel bearing by actuating pump.

Pressing in wheel bearing
Installation position: Large ID of wheel bearing faces outward.





- Install wheel bearing -1-, pressure piece -2- (insert collar in bearing) and hollow piston cylinder -3- to wheel bearing housing with tie bolt.
- Install pressure piece -4- from inside with chamfered edges facing wheel bearing housing and special nut -5-.
- Press in wheel bearing by actuating pump.

Pressing in wheel hub
- Install wheel hub -1- and hollow piston cylinder -2- to wheel bearing with tie bolt.
- Install pressure piece -3.- from inside with collar facing special nut -4-.
- Press in wheel hub by actuating pump.

Perform remaining installation operations in reverse order from removal.
