Side Curtain Airbag (Avant), Removing And Installing
Special tools, testers and auxiliary items required
- Torque wrench V.A.G 1783
- Vehicle Diagnosis, Testing and Information System VAS 5051 A
CAUTION: Note safety precautions for working on airbags and side curtain airbags.
NOTE:
- There are 2 airbag versions. Both versions are described in the following. Determine which version the vehicle has and performed the corresponding activities.

Version 1
1 - Side curtain airbag connector
2 - Side curtain airbag
- Removal:
- Disconnect the battery ground (GND) strap.
- Remove sun visor.
- Remove upper trim on A-pillar.
- Remove D-pillar trim.
- Remove trim above rear door.
- To disconnect harness connector - 1 -, open fuse using a screwdriver.
- Remove screw - 6 -.
- Loosen four bolts - 7 -.
- Remove screw - 5 -.
- Place front part of side curtain airbag module on seats.
- Loosen three bolts - 3 -.
- Remove four bolts - 4 - and remove brackets - arrows - from roof frame.
- Remove head-level airbag - 2 - from vehicle.
- Installing:
CAUTION: Always follow side curtain airbag installation procedure.
- Insert brackets - arrows -.
- Secure four brackets - arrows - beginning from behind with four bolts - 4 -.
- Install three bolts - 3 -.
- Install last bolt - 5 -.
- Install four bolts - 7 -.
- Install bolt - 6 -.
- When connecting harness connector - 1 -, make sure that it is firmly engaged.
Further installation is performed in the reverse order of removal. Observe the following when doing so:
- Switch on ignition.
CAUTION: No one should be in vehicle when connecting battery.
- Connect the battery ground (GND) strap.
NOTE:
- Follow safety measures after connecting battery.
- If the Airbag Malfunction Indicator Lamp (MIL) K75 shows a malfunction after assembly, DTC memory must be checked with Vehicle Diagnostic, Testing and Information System VAS 5051 A, cleared and then rechecked.
3 - Bolts (3x)
- Tightening torque 3.5 Nm
- Self-locking
- Replace after each disassembly
- Threaded holes for screws must always be cleaned (for example, with thread cutter)
4 - Screws (4x)
- Tightening torque 3.5 Nm
- Self-locking
- Replace after each disassembly
- Threaded holes for screws must always be cleaned (for example, with thread cutter)
5 - Screw
- Tightening torque 3.5 Nm
- Self-locking
- Replace after each disassembly
- Threaded holes for screws must always be cleaned (for example, with thread cutter)
6 - Screw
- Tightening torque 3.5 Nm
- Self-locking
- Replace after each disassembly
- Threaded holes for screws must always be cleaned (for example, with thread cutter)
7 - Screws (4x)
- Tightening torque 3.5 Nm
- Self-locking
- Replace after each disassembly
- Threaded holes for screws must always be cleaned (for example, with thread cutter)
Version 2

1 - Cap nut
- Tightening torque

- Tightening torque 3.5 Nm
- Self-locking
- Replace after each disassembly
- Threaded holes for screws must always be cleaned (for example, with thread cutter)

8 - Side curtain airbag
9 - Side curtain airbag connector
- Removal:
- Disconnect the battery ground (GND) strap.
- Remove sun visor.
- Remove upper trim on A-pillar.
- Remove D-pillar trim.
- Remove trim above rear door.
- Disconnect connector - 9 - on side curtain airbag.
- Remove bolt - 6 -.
- Remove bolts - 2 - (Qty. 2) in area of gas generator.
- Remove cap nut - 1 -in area of gas generator.
- Remove bolts - 4 -, - 5 - and - 7 -.
- Remove bolt - 3 -.
- Unclip bracket - 6 - and remaining brackets up to bracket - 3 - from roof frame. Firmly hold side curtain airbag.
- Unclip bracket - 3 - from roof frame and remove side curtain airbag from vehicle.
Side curtain airbag connector, disconnecting
- Removing:
- Unlock connector lock with a small screwdriver - 3 -.
- Disconnect connector - 1 - from ignition pill - 2 -.
- Installing:
CAUTION:
- Note safety precautions for working on airbags and side curtain airbags.
- Always follow side curtain airbag installation procedure.
- Clip bracket - 3 - into roof frame.
- Clip in brackets - 4 -,- 5 -,- 6 - and - 7 -.
- Tighten bolt - 3 -.
- Engage side curtain airbag at threaded pins and tighten nut - 1 - by hand.
- Tighten bolts - 2 -.
- Tighten bolts - 4 -, - 5 - and - 7 - and and.
- Tighten bolt - 6 -.
- Tighten nuts - 1 -.
Installation is reverse of removal, noting the following:
- Switch on ignition.
CAUTION: No one should be in vehicle when connecting battery.
- Connect the battery ground (GND) strap.
NOTE:
- Follow safety measures after connecting battery.
- If the Airbag Malfunction Indicator Lamp (MIL) K75 shows a malfunction after assembly, DTC memory must be checked with Vehicle Diagnostic, Testing and Information System VAS 5051 A, cleared and then rechecked.
