Steering column, removing and installing
Removing
- Remove control lever.
- Remove airbag steering wheel.
- Removing cover of steering column switch and steering column:compartments/Covers and trim panels
- Remove steering column switch
Securing steering column prior to removal
- Pull wire through hole in bottom part of steering column -arrow- and spring.
Note: Wire can also be pulled through spring and universal link.
An assembly lock is required to prevent top and bottom parts of steering column being pulled apart when pulling off steering gear.
Mesh section will become separated if top and bottom parts of steering column are pulled too far apart or excessively telescoped.
Rattling noise may subsequently be encountered if mesh section is no longer in its original installation position.
For vehicles with automatic transmission, locking cable must be disengaged:
- Place selector lever in park position.
- Switch ignition key to position -B- "Ignition ON".
- Lift interlock lever -1- slightly and pull locking cable -2- from ignition lock housing.
- Loosen bolt -arrow-.
Tightening torque: 30 Nm
- Unscrew bolts -1-.
Tightening torque: 22 Nm
Installing
Install in reverse order.
Pay particular attention to the following on installation:
^ New replacement steering columns feature a transportation safeguard.
^ This must be removed after installing steering column in vehicle.
- Remove cable tie.
Cable tie acts as a transport lock
- Ensure stress-free alignment of steering column with respect to steering gear pinion.
For vehicles with automatic transmission, engage locking cable:
- Switch ignition key to position -B- "Ignition ON" to engage locking cable.
- Place selector lever in park position.
- Insert locking cable -2- in ignition lock housing. Make sure locking bracket -1- engages.
Functional check of locking cable
- Switch ignition key to position -B- "Ignition ON".
^ It must be possible to move selector lever out of park position without it catching.
^ It must not be possible to remove ignition key with selector lever in any position other than park.
- Place selector lever in park position.
^ Ignition lock must operate smoothly, without catching.
^ With ignition key in position -A- "Ignition off", it must not be possible to move the selector lever out of park. It must be possible to remove the ignition key.
