Rear Suspension (FWD)
Rear axle components (front wheel drive), overview
Note:
Axle beam must not be welded or straightened.
^ Always replace self-locking nuts.
^ Screw connections must not be tightened more than hand-tight using a pneumatic screwdriver, electric screwdriver or anything similar.
1. Spring support

^ Removing and installing
^ Must be replaced when installing new wheel bearing unit.
4. Coil spring
^ Shock absorber, removing and installing
^ Surface of spring coil may not be damaged
^ Note different types of springs, see vehicle data sticker

^ After the left and right springs are installed, their bottom ends should lie in the marked area as shown.
(Arrow -A-) shows direction of travel.
(Arrow -B-) points to the right
^ In this connection the bottom turns of the spring have markings on them which must point backward during installation.
5. Wheel bearing
^ When replacing wheel bearing unit, ABS wheel speed sensor must also be replaced.
6. Mounting bracket
^ After installation check settings and adjust if necessary
^ Use special care when starting bolts
^ Different versions

^ Do not mix cast and forged mounting brackets.
7. Hex nut
^ Always replace after disassembly
8. Hex bolt M12 x 1.5 x 90
^ Always replace after disassembly
^ 110 Nm plus additional 90° turn
^ Thread in body can be repaired with thread insert made of wire according to DIN 8140 (Helicoil). Thread insert must have same length as thread in body.
9. Stone Impact protection plate for mounting bracket
^ Only for rough terrain suspension
10. Hex bolt, 10 Nm
11. Hex bolt M12 x 1.5 x 60
^ Always replace after disassembly
^ Use special care when starting bolts.
^ 110 Nm plus additional 90° turn
^ Thread in body can be repaired with thread insert made of wire according to DIN 8140 (Helicoil). Thread insert must have same length as thread in body.
12. Axle beam
^ Contact surface for wheel bearing/Wheel hub and threaded holes must be free of paint and dirt
^ Observe removing and installing procedures for vehicles with headlight vertical aim control
^ After installation check settings and adjust if necessary
13. Hex bolt M14 x 1.5 x 190
^ 120 Nm plus additional 90° turn
^ Always replace after disassembly

^ Use special care when starting bolts
^ Thread in body can be repaired with thread insert made of wire according to DIN 8140 (Helicoil). Thread insert must have same length as thread in body.
Explanation of weight codes (Part numbers)
For improved alignment, spring assignment is divided into weight Production Relevant numbers.
The spring/shock absorber combination installed in vehicle is documented through the corresponding Part No. on the vehicle data sticker.
Example of a vehicle data sticker
^ A- shows Part No. for front axle
^ B- shows Part No. for rear axle
^ (Arrow) indicates suspension
Vehicle data sticker is located in spare tire well and in service book.
Use Part No. to locate appropriate spring combination in replacement part supplier.
