Steering Column: Service and Repair


Steering column, removing and installing
Removing
The steering column is only available as a complete unit for a replacement part. Servicing is not possible.
Steering lock housing can be modified.

WARNING:
^ Before removing steering wheel, wheels must be positioned In the straight-ahead position.
^ Observe safety precautions for working on airbags.
^ If these procedures are not observed, the airbag system may not function property during vehicle operation!


^ Remove airbag unit, for sport steering wheel.
^ Remove steering wheel, for sport steering wheel.
^ Observe procedures for removing steering angle sensor in vehicles with Electronic Stabilization Program (ESP)

Removing steering column switch
^ Disengage steering column adjustment.
^ Remove steering column completely.





^ Remove bolt -1- (2x). Tightening torque 3 Nm.
^ Remove handle -2-.





^ Remove two Phillips head screws (arrows).
^ Tightening torque: 0.6 Nm
^ Remove upper trim for steering wheel switch -1-.
To install, insert upper shell into catch in lower shell, swing down and bolt





^ Remove bolts -2- (2x). Tightening torque 0.6 Nm.
^ Remove hex bolt -1-.
Tightening torque: 0.6 Nm
^ Remove lower trim for steering wheel switch -3-.





^ Disconnect connector -1-.
^ Loosen bolt -2-.
Tightening torque: 3 Nm
^ Disconnect connector -3-.
^ Remove steering column switch -4-.





^ Release cable ties and connectors located at steering column.
For vehicles with automatic transmission, locking cable must be disengaged:
^ Place selector lever in park position.





^ Switch ignition key to position -B- "Ignition ON".
^ Lift locking lever -1- slightly and pull locking cable -2- from ignition lock housing.





^ Remove nut -1- at universal joint.
^ Release tension on eccentric bolt by turning adjusting bolt (Torx T50) clockwise and remove bolt
^ Disengage steering column adjustment.





^ Swing universal joint to side.





^ Remove socket head bolts -1- for steering column and remove steering column.

^ Check steering column for damage

Installing





^ Attach steering column to crossmember using 4 socket head bolts -1-.
^ Disengage steering column adjustment.





^ Attach universal joint to pinion gear of steering gear.
^ Insert locking screw (Torx T50) through lower part and pre-tension by counter clockwise.
^ Insert hex nut and tighten to 30 Nm.

For vehicles with automatic transmission, engage locking cable:





^ Switch ignition key to position -B- "Ignition ON" to engage locking cable.
^ Place selector lever in park position.
^ Insert locking cable -2- in ignition lock housing. Make sure locking bracket -1 - engages.

Functional check of locking cable:





^ Switch ignition key to position -13- "Ignition ON".
^ It must be possible to switch selector lever out of park position without it catching.
^ It must not be possible to remove ignition key with selector lever in any position other than park.
^ Place selector lever in park position.
^ Ignition lock must operate smoothly, without catching.
^ With ignition key in position -A- "Ignition off", it must not be possible to move the selector lever out of park. The ignition key can be removed.
Basic setting and routing of locking cable
^ Install steering column switch with trim.
^ Position steering column so that gaps in trim are uniform.





^ Tighten socket head bolts -1- for steering column to 25 Nm.

Vehicles with electrically adjustable steering column only:
^ Tighten tolerance adjusting screw.
^ Connect wiring of servo motors.
^ Use cable tie to attach wires to steering column.

All vehicles (continued)
^ Install driver's side storage compartment.
^ Install steering wheel.
^ Install airbag control module.
