Mounting Bracket (Aluminum Wheel Bearing Housing), Removing and Installing
Mounting bracket (aluminum wheel bearing housing), removing and installing
Removing
^ Remove hubcap, for light-alloy wheels pull off center cap (use pulling hook in vehicle tools).
^ Remove wheel.
^ Secure brake disc using a wheel bolt.
^ Remove clip -1- with pliers.
Note: This clip does not have to be reused.
^ Remove nut -2- and hex bolt, and lift out both links.
Slits in wheel bearing housing may not be widened with a chisel or similar tool!
^ Protect boot on steering gear from damage.
Figure shows steering gear disassembled, to illustrate it more clearly.
If you wish to order protective sleeve -1-, its part number is 893 512 137.
^ Protective sleeve -1- must have a strip having dimension A from 20 to 25 mm cut out of it.
^ Carefully deburr cut edges.
^ Push protective sleeve over boot of steering gear.
The open side with slit should face downward.
To unscrew hex bolt from suspension strut/track control link, you must detach guide link from wheel bearing housing.
^ Detach brake caliper and fasten to body.
Use 4 mm socket wrench to hold joint bolt, if necessary.
Note:
^ For safety reasons, put collar nut back on joint bolt of guide link with about 4 turns, so that it is flush.
^ Be sure that both lever arms are parallel to each other during greatest applied pressure, adjust if necessary.
^ Press joint bolts of guide link off conical seating.
Be careful not to damage CV boot in the process!
Note: In order not to damage joints of lower control arms, it is necessary to use engine/transmission jack VAG1383-A, for example, to brace against too strong rebound.
^ Unscrew hex bolt -1-, suspension strut/track control link.
^ Swing wheel bearing housing away to the side.
^ Unscrew hex bolt -1- in radiator tank.
^ Remove suspension strut with mounting bracket.
Be careful not to damage CV boot in the process!
Unscrew upper link from mounting bracket
^ Clamp suspension strut in vise (use protective pads).
^ Unscrew both links (arrows).
^ Unscrew nuts -1-, take off mounting bracket
Installing
F = Direction of travel
R = Right mounting bracket
L = Left mounting bracket
^ Holes in spring seat (arrows) of suspension strut -1- must face middle of vehicle.
^ Tighten hex nuts -2- to 20 Nm (18 ft. lbs.).
Installing upper links onto mounting bracket
^ Line up upper link, dimension (A) = 57 ± 2 mm.
^ Replace all bolts and nuts.
^ Tighten hex bolts -1 - of both links to 50 Nm, plus additional 90° turn.
^ Insert suspension strut with mounting bracket into suspension strut tower. Tighten hex bolts -1- to 75 Nm.
Note: Make sure washers are correctly seated.
^ Bonded rubber bushings can only be turned to a limited extent The bolted connections on the suspension links should therefore only be tightened when the vehicle is standing on the ground.
^ Insert fork head of suspension strut into control arm, tighten nut -1- to 90 Nm.
Note: Remove any adhesive remaining on thread of joint bolt.
^ Screw track control link/guide link to wheel carrier, tighten to 125 Nm.
^ Insert both upper links, tighten nuts -2- to 40 Nm.
^ Press upper links down as far as possible when tightening!
^ Insert cable of ABS wheel speed sensor into bracket on brake caliper.
^ Mount brake disc, screw on brake caliper, and tighten to 190 Nm (M 14 x 1.5 x 38).
^ Mount wheel.
Suspension adjustment at front axle must be checked on an alignment stand recommended by VW/Audi, and corrected, if necessary.
