Transmission, removing and installing

CAUTION: Before beginning repairs on the electrical system:
^ Obtain the anti-theft radio security code.
^ Switch the Ignition off.
^ Disconnect the battery Ground (GND) strap.
^ On vehicles equipped with Audi Telematics by OnStar, switch-off the emergency (backup) battery for the Telematic/Telephone Control Module prior to disconnecting vehicle battery.
^ After reconnecting vehicle battery, re-code and check operation of anti-theft radio.
^ After reconnecting vehicle battery on vehicles equipped with Audi Telematics by OnStar, switch-on the emergency (backup) battery for the Telematic/Telephone Control Module.

Transmission, removing and installing





Special tools and equipment
^ 10-222 A - Engine sling with brackets
^ 10-222 AM - Engine support brackets
^ VAG 1383A - Engine/transmission jack
^ 3282 - Transmission support
^ 3282/25 - Adjustment plate
^ 3282/49 - G Support bolt
^ 3282/52 - Support, 3 pieces





^ VAG 130/6 - Oil drip tray





^ 80-200 - Lever

Removing

Note: All cable ties or clips that are loosened or removed during removal of the transmission must be installed in the same position when installing the transmission .

See Caution for disconnecting Telematics battery
^ Obtain radio code for theft-protected radio.
^ Remove battery Ground cable.





^ Remove engine cover -arrows-.





^ Remove intake air duct -1- to air cleaner -arrows-.





^ Remove hose -1-.
^ Disconnect intake air duct -2- to throttle vale unit.





^ Remove hose -1- from air cleaner by turning it in direction of arrow.
^ Remove bracket for frequency valve -2- from air cleaner body.
^ Remove connector for Mass Air Flow Meter -3-.
^ Remove bolt -arrow- and remove air cleaner with mass air flow meter and intake air duct.
^ Disconnect connectors for left and right oxygen sensors next to throttle valve unit
^ Remove bolts for engine coolant reservoir and set aside.
^ Remove bolts for left and right upper exhaust system connection.
^ Remove all connecting bolts for engine and transmission that can be reached from above.





^ Install engine/transmission sling 10-222 A with brackets 10-222 A/1.
^ Insert hook of spindle in eyelet A- at rear of engine.

Note: Be sure not to damage any connectors or hoses, if necessary remove them.

^ Slightly pre-tension engine and transmission unit with spindles.
^ Lift vehicle.
^ Remove front road wheels.





^ Remove noise dampener.





^ Remove bracket for rear noise damping -1-.
^ Turn securing lever -4- and remove connector for transmission harness.
^ Remove connector for MultiFunction Transmission Range (TR) Switch -2- and remove bracket for connector -3-.





^ Remove heat shields for left and right axle shafts -arrows-.
^ Remove axle shafts from transmission flanges.





^ Remove Engine Speed (RPM) Sensor I -G28- arrow B- at left front of transmission.
^ Remove connector - arrow A- from Speedometer Vehicle Speed Sensor (VSS) -G22.
^ Remove heat shield for shift lever cable.
^ Remove lower nuts for exhaust pipes from exhaust manifold.
^ Remove left and right oxygen sensors behind catalytic converters and mark which one was installed on right and which on left.
^ Loosen dual clamp and remove front exhaust pipes with catalytic converters and upper oxygen sensors.





^ Remove heat shield -A- above drive shaft
^ Remove heat shield -13- for drive shaft from cover for Torsen differential -arrows-.





^ Remove connector for sender for transmission output RPM -G195 together with heat shield foil -A-.
^ Remove drive shaft at transmission and either support or hang up with wire.
^ Remove starter motor.





^ Remove 3 bolts for torque converter through the opening of the removed starter motor. Turn crankshaft 1/3 turns.

Note: To loosen bolts, counterhold at the center bolt of the vibration damper.

^ Remove Multi-Function Transmission Range (TR) Switch.





^ Remove socket for selector lever cable -1- from selector lever -2- at transmission.





^ If necessary mark position of bracket for selector lever cable on transmission case for re-installation and remove bracket -arrows-.
^ Remove clamp for ATF line at connecting bolt for engine and transmission.
^ Place oil drip pan VAG 1306 below transmission.
^ Remove ATF lines at transmission, pull out and set aside.
^ Cap lines and transmission connections with clean caps to prevent ATF from running out.
^ Install transmission support 3282 with adjustment plate 3282/25 and install on engine/transmission jack VAG 1383 A.





^ Support transmission with jack VAG 1383 A and transmission support 3282 from below. Secure left support -arrow- with bolt M10.

Note:
^ The symbols on the alignment plate identify the necessary supports for the automatic transmission OIL. The arrow points toward driving direction.
^ As an alternative, the transmission can be supported with jack VAG 1383 A and support plate 135912.





^ Remove left transmission support complete with transmission mount





^ Remove right transmission support complete with transmission mount.
^ Lower engine/transmission carrier front and rear.
^ Remove both engine mounts from engine/transmission carrier.
^ If necessary, lift engine a little more using spindles.

Note: Be sure throttle unit does not damage dampening material on the wall.

^ Remove remaining bolts between engine and transmission.
^ If necessary, lower engine again using spindles.
^ Lower transmission carefully by adjusting transmission support plate 3282 at rear.





^ Press off torque converter with lever from drive plate.
^ Separate transmission from engine.





^ Lower transmission by adjusting transmission support 3282 at rear.
^ Guide transmission out tilted toward rear and down.

Note:
^ If necessary reduce pre-tensioning at the spindle of support 10-222 A.
^ Be sure there is sufficient clearance between body bulkhead and engine.
^ Secure torque converter to prevent it from failing out

Installing

Note:
Before installing an exchange transmission, clean ATF cooler and lines.
Installation is in reverse order of removal but note the following:

^ Before installing transmissions check that torque converter is properly inserted in transmission.





^ Before installing transmissions be sure that dowels -A- and -B- are properly installed in engine flange.
^ Be careful not to catch any loose wiring between engine and transmission.
^ To fasten torque converter to drive plate always use new bolts (M 10 x 1 x 17) meant for this purpose.
^ Always replace self locking bolts and nuts.
^ Always replace gaskets and O-rings.
^ Always replace M 14-bolts and lock washers at engine and transmission carrier.

^ Install engine/transmission carrier observing tightening sequence.
^ Adjust selector lever cable.
^ Reinstall drive shaft to transmission flange.





^ Reconnect connector for sender for transmission output RPM -G1 95 and be sure heat shield foil -A- above transmission is properly fastened.
^ Install exhaust system.
^ Check gear oil in final drive of automatic transmission.
^ Check ATF level.
^ Reinstall axle shafts left and right.

Tightening torques

Support bracket to transmission (2 x M8) items 2 and 3 23 Nm (17 ft. lbs.)
Heat shield/selector lever cable to transmission, M6, item 1 9 Nm (80 inch lbs.)
Heat shield/selector lever cable to transmission, M8, item 4 23 Nm (17 ft. lbs.)
Drive plate to torque converter M 10 x 1 (replace bolts 85 Nm (63 ft. lbs.)
Transmission support to transmission M10 40 Nm (30 ft. lbs.)
Transmission support to transmission mount M10 50 Nm (37 ft. lbs.)
Transmission mount to engine/transmission carrier M8 23 Nm (17 ft. lbs.)
Multi-Function Transmission Range (TR) Switch to transmission 8 Nm (71 ft. lbs.)
Heat shield for drive axle to transmission M8 23 Nm (17 ft. lbs.)
Heat shield for drive shaft to transmission M8 25 Nm (18 ft. lbs.)
