Shift Mechanism

Removing
- Move selector lever to "P".
- Obtain radio anti-theft code.
- Disconnect battery ground cable.
- Remove handle from selector lever.
- Remove center console and extension.
- Disconnect electrical connection.
- Remove cover.
- Lift vehicle.
- Disconnect exhaust system with catalytic converters from rear section of exhaust system and suspend with wire.





- Remove heat shield -A- above drive shaft.
- Remove heat shield -B- for drive shaft from cover for Torsen differential -arrows-.
- Disconnect drive shaft at transmission and support or hang up with wire.
- Remove rubber sleeve from selector lever cable at cover of shift mechanism and push backward.





- Remove cover from mounting bracket -arrows-.





- Press clamp -B- at both ends and remove.
- Remove lock plate -A- for selector lever cable at mounting bracket and remove downward.
- Remove selector lever cable from selector lever.

From above:
- Disengage lock cable from securing spring at mounting bracket by slightly lifting securing spring.
- Remove 4 nuts.

From below:
- Remove mounting bracket downward.
- At the same time pull out selector lever cable from mounting bracket. Avoid kinking cable.

Installing
- Install cable in reverse order of removal.
- In addition, the following test steps must be performed and observed.
^ Move selector lever/selector shaft to "P" (parking lock must engage).
- Lift vehicle.
- Insert selector lever cable into mounting bracket.
- Do not kink selector lever cable.
- Install mounting bracket to body.
- Tighten 4 nuts from above with 10 Nm (7 ft. lbs.).
- Attach rubber sleeve to cover of shift mechanism.
- Connect electrical connector.
- Install lock cable and adjust.
- Install cover
- Install handle for selector lever.
- Attach selector lever cable to selector lever.





- Install lock plate -A- for selector lever cable to mounting bracket.

Installation position:
- Angled ends of lock plate must point toward end of selector lever cable.
- Press ends of camp -B- together and attach to end of selector lever cable.
- Attach cover





- Tighten 4 nuts -arrows- to 10 Nm (7 ft. lbs.).
- Check adjustment of selector lever cable and if necessary.
- Check ignition key lock.
- Install drive shaft to transmission flange.
- Install heat shield.
- Attach front exhaust system to rear portion of exhaust system.
- Install center console and extension.
- Reconnect battery ground cable.
- For vehicles with anti-theft radio activate radio code.
- Check shift mechanism.
