Removing
Note: All cable ties opened or cut during engine removal must be reinstalled at file same locations during installation.
WARNING! For vehicles with Telematic activate service mode of Telematic of the control module before disconnecting the battery.
- Note radio code (for vehicles equipped with coded anti-theft radio / radio navigation system).
- Place selector lever in position "P".
- Remove cover above the battery (arrows).
- Disconnect battery Ground (GND) strap (arrow) with the ignition switched off.
- Remove rear engine cover (arrows).
- Remove front engine cover (arrows).
- Remove coolant reservoir (arrow)
- Disconnect electrical wiring to Engine Coolant Level (ECL) Warning Switch -F66- at bottom of expansion tank.
- Tie coolant expansion tank with connected coolant hoses -1 to 3- to side.
- Disconnect vacuum hose to brake booster (arrows).
- Remove heat shield for harness connectors at left of bulkhead.
- Remove harness connectors -1 to -4- from bracket at left of bulkhead.
- Disconnect electrical harness connectors -1 and -4-.
- Guide wires to the oxygen sensors downward.
- Unscrew oxygen sensor behind catalytic converter (arrow) using special tool 3337.

- Remove nut -2- for left exhaust pipe/exhaust manifold, which is accessible from top.

- Remove cover -1- in engine compartment (right side).
- Remove bolts for holding plate -3- for solenoid valves (arrows).
- Disconnect intake air hose -1- at Mass Air Flow (MAF) sensor.
- Remove hose -4- from air duct -2-.
- Remove bolt (arrow) and disconnect air duct -2- at throttle valve control module.
- Disconnect hose -1- from air guide if installed.
Note: Illustration depicts air guide with the removed engine from rear.
- Remove harness connectors -1 to 4 from bracket at right of bulkhead.
- Disconnect electrical harness connectors -1 and -4-.
- Guide wires to the oxygen sensors downward.
- Remove bracket for harness connectors.
- Unscrew oxygen sensor behind catalytic converter (arrow) using special tool 3337.

- Remove nut -2- for right exhaust pipe/exhaust manifold which is accessible from top.

- Set 10-222A engine support bridge with 10222A/1 engine brackets on fender mounting edges.
- Pre-tension engine slightly using spindle on engine support bridge.
- Remove both front wheels.
- For vehicles with auxiliary heater, remove bolts (arrows) for exhaust pipe of parking heater/auxiliary heater on noise insulation.
- Loosen mounting parts -1 to 5- and remove noise insulation (2 parts).
- Remove bracket for noise insulation (arrows).
Note: Flex joint in front exhaust pipe must not be bent more than 10, otherwise it may be damaged.
- Disconnect exhaust system at both double clamps -arrows-.
- Remove VAG1359/2 universal mount from VAG1383A engine/transmission jack and place a piece of wood -1- onto punch instead.
- Support transmission using VAG1383A engine/transmission jack.
WARNING! The lock carrier must be installed - danger of injury.
- First remove bolts -2- and -3- and then mounting bolts -1- and -4- of subframe.
- Slowly lower transmission and subframe using VAG1383A engine/transmission jack.
- Remove heat shield -1- for drive axle left and right sides.
- Remove drive axle from transmission flange on left and right sides.
- Unbolt bracket At- from left front exhaust pipe.
- Unbolt bracket -2- from right front exhaust pipe.
- Expose oxygen sensor wires.
- Remove nuts -1- and -3- for front exhaust pipe/left exhaust manifold which are accessible from bottom.
Note: Illustration is shown with engine removed.
- Remove front exhaust pipe with pro- and main catalytic converters.
- Remove nuts -1- and -3- for front exhaust pipe/right exhaust manifold which are accessible from bottom.

- Expose oxygen sensor wires.
- Remove front exhaust pipe with pre- and main catalytic converters.
- Slightly lift transmission and installed piece of wood using VAG1 383A engine/transmission jack.
- Remove bolts 1 to 4 for transmission mount.
- Unbolt both transmission mounts -5- and -6 at transmission housing and remove transmission supports with transmission mounts.
- Slowly lower transmission again.
- Remove Engine Speed (RPM) sensor-G28 on left of transmission (arrow) and lay to side.
- Remove air guide at generator.
- Unbolt bracket for ATF-lines (arrow).
Observe the rules of cleanliness for working on automatic transmissions.
- Remove bolt (arrow) and disconnect ATF-lines from transmission.
- Tie up ATF lines off to side.
- Disengage harness connector -A- in direction of arrow and disconnect it from transmission.
- Move wiring harness clear.
- Remove bracket -3- for selector lever cable by first removing bolt -2-.
- Press off selector lever cable -A- from shift rod lever using pry lever 80-200 (arrow).
- Remove bolts -2- to -7- at flange of engine/transmission.
- Turn bolt -Item -8- only to loosen, and then tighten by hand.
- Install transmission support 3282 on to engine/transmission jack V.A.G 1383 A.
- Set Template 3282/30 on to transmission support 3282 (template 3282/30 only fits in one position).
- Align transmission support arms to correspond with the holes in template.
- Bolt attachments as labeled on template.
- Roll -VAG1383A engine/transmission jack with 3282 transmission support under transmission and support transmission.
Note: Arrow symbol on template points in the direction of travel.
- Align template parallel to transmission and secure to transmission using a bolt M10 x 20 (arrow).
- Raise transmission slightly using VAG1383A engine/transmission jack.
- Remove bolts -1-, -9-, -10- and -1 1- at flange of engine/transmission.
- Slowly lower transmission again.
- Set drive axles to the rear.
- Remove last mounting bolts for engine/transmission.
- Press off transmission from bushings and let it down carefully.
