Removing And Installing Backrest Cover And Padding For 2/3 Backrest Section
Removing
- Remove backrest.
- Remove bolts - 2 - (2x) in lock trim - 3 -.
- Remove head restraint - 4 - by pressing catch on left head restraint guide - 6 -.
- Remove center head restraint - 10 - by pressing buttons on left and right guides - 13 -.
- Remove center armrest - 11 -.
- Remove ski bag - 12 -.
- Remove head restraint guide - 13 - Fig. 1.
- Remove head restraint guide - 6 - Fig. 2.
- Pry fastening strip - 15 - out of backrest panel - 5 -.
- Use screwdriver to pry out trim for three-point belt - 19 -.
- Detach hooks - 17 - from wire clips - 21 -.
- Use screwdriver to pry fastening strip - 16 - out of fastening groove - 14 -.
- Cut through upholstery clips - 7 - and remove seat cover.
- Remove heated backrest - 8 -.
Installing
- Use VAG 1634 stapling tool to install new upholstery clips.
- When installing a new backrest panel, bend retaining tabs - 18 - inward approx. 1-2 mm to provide better support for fastening strip.
NOTE: Check the following points after completing installation of backrest:
- Seat belt guide fitting and webbing must not make contact with or rub against foam parts or seat cover fabric.
- Guide fitting must follow all movements of belt webbing.
- Belt webbing must run freely in all directions.
1 - Locking lever
- Remove bolts - 2 - (2x) in lock trim - 3 -.
- Detach locking lever from underneath at engaging hooks (2x).
- Use screwdriver to pry out locking lever at top.

4 - Outer head restraint
The outer rear head restraints are not identical with the front head restraints. Mark accordingly with adhesive tape if all head restraints are removed together.

- Always install guide piece with button on the left side.
- The button should always face toward the left.

- When backrest is locked in position, pin protrudes 1-2 mm above lock trim.
- When backrest is not locked, pin protrudes approx. 20 mmabove lock trim and red mark is visible.

- If installing a new seat cover, cut hole in fabric for ski bag.
13 - Center head restraint guide
- Both head restraint guides are equipped with buttons
- Button must always face left
14 - Fastening groove

18 - Retaining tabs
19 - Trim for three-point belt
20 - Lock cylinder
- Removing and installing lock cylinder involves use of ignition key.
- Remove locking lever.
- Use screwdriver to pry out retaining tabs and at the same time press out lock cylinder.

For greater clarity, head restraint guide - 1 - is shown removed.
- Insert upholstery needle or screwdriver - 3 - with maximum width of 2 mm into hole - 4 - (opposite retaining clip for head restraint guide).
- Pry screwdriver - 3 - in direction of -arrow A-, press retainer tab - 2 - in direction of -arrow B- and pull out head restraint guide - 1 -.
