Adaptive Cruise Control Adjustment With VAS 6430
Adaptive Cruise Control Adjustment with VAS 6430
Special tools, testers and auxiliary items required
• Vehicle diagnostic, testing and information system (VAS 5051B) with corresponding diagnostic cable.
• Wheel alignment computer
• Setting device (VAS 6430)
• Before driving the vehicle onto the alignment stand, check whether there is a sufficiently large space between the vehicle and the (VAS 6430). The distance between the (VAS 6430) and the vehicle must be 120 cm ± 5 cm.
• If there is not sufficient space, drive the vehicle backward onto the alignment stand in order to be able to use the corresponding space.
• Before beginning adjustment, interrogate the Diagnostic Trouble Code (DTC) memory and correct any malfunctions present.
The adjustment procedure is described here with the (VAS 6430).
•
If there was a previous alignment, the steps under "Calibration procedure without a previous alignment" should not performed.
Calibration Procedure without a Previous Alignment
- Connect the battery charger.
- Activate the vehicle lift mode. Refer to => [ Vehicle Lift Mode ] General Information.
- Select the Adaptive Cruise Control (ACC) calibration button on the alignment computer.
- Install the quick clamps on the rear wheels.
- Install the measuring sensors on the rear wheels.
- Perform a wheel run out compensation on the rear wheels.
• Do not move the (VAS 6430) on the calibration beam.
Calibration Procedure with or without a Previous Alignment
Vehicles with a Decorative Grille
- Remove the decorative grille - 1 - from the front bumper cover.
Vehicles with a Radiator Grille
- Remove the license plate holder and the ACC cover from the radiator grille - 1 -.
- Remove all the dirt on the sensor lens and on the inside of the radar cover.
- Remove the springs on the approximate adjustment device - 1 -.
- Guide the approximate adjustment device - 1 - through the decorative grille from bottom to top - arrow 3 - and position it on the sensor.
- Tilt the approximate adjustment device - 1 - and press it onto the sensor - arrow 2 -.
- Position the (VAS 6430) at a distance - A - of 120 cm ± 5 cm from approximate adjustment device to mirror surface.
- Install the front wheel measuring sensors - 1 - on the (VAS 6430).
- In area - A -, bring item - 2 - on rotary knob into alignment with marking on mirror (number 2 on rotary knob must face toward vehicle).
- Now align the (VAS 6430) by sliding it sideways - B arrows - so that the laser beam is centered horizontally on the approximate adjustment device.
- Level the bubble levels - A and B - on the (VAS 6430) using the adjusting screws - 1, 2 and 3 -.
- Adjust the mirror - 4 - using the crank - arrow - on the (VAS 6430) so the laser beam is centered vertically on the sensor lens, approximate adjustment device.
- Adjust the same front axle individual toe settings using fine adjustment screw - 5 -.
- The difference between individual toe values must be less than 6' or they must be the same.
- Bring bubbles - 2 - on measurement sensor - 1 - into balance.
- Check the preliminary adjustment using the laser beam - 3 - on the (VAS 6430).
- The reflected laser beam must hit the same point - 3 - where it leaves the (VAS 6430).
- If the reflected laser beam does not hit the point where it leaves the device, perform the preliminary calibration again.
- Adjust the reflected laser beam using a long 3 mm socket wrench on the bolts 3 mm- 1 and 2 - on the laser outlet point.
- Remove the approximate adjustment device once the preliminary adjustment is correct.
- Connect the (VAS 5051/B).
- Connect the (VAS 5051/5A) to the diagnostic connector.
- Switch the (VAS 5051/B) on.
(VAS 5051/B) is ready to operate when it displays operating modes in button fields.
- Switch on ignition.
- Touch the Guided Fault Finding on screen.
- Select one after another:
• Brand
• Model
• Model year
• Version
• Engine code
- Confirm the data entered.
Wait until the (VAS 5051/B) has checked all available control modules in vehicle.
- Press the Go to button and select "Function/Component Selection" function.
Then
- "Body (Repair Group 01; 27; 50 - 97)".
- "Electrical System (Repair group 01; 27; 50 - 97)".
- "01- On Board Diagnostic (OBD) capable systems".
- "13 - Distance control".
- "J428 - Distance Regulation Control Module, functions".
- "J428 - Distance regulation calibration".
Now follow instructions on screen to perform adjustment.
- Use screws - 1 - and - 2 - for fine adjustment in "Guide Fault-Finding".
CAUTION!
The ACC adjustment is only accepted if "actuator test ended" is displayed in (VAS 5051/B).
- Switch the ignition off.
- Disconnect the (VAS 5051/5A) connector from the diagnostic connection.
- Disconnect the battery charger.
