Variable Valve Timing Actuator: Testing and Inspection
Valve -1- For Camshaft Adjustment -N205- And Valve -2- For Camshaft Adjustment -N208-, Checking
Solenoid valve for camshaft adjustment, electrical testing
- Disconnect connector at respective solenoid valve for camshaft adjustment.
- Perform a resistance measurement between terminals on solenoid valve using hand multimeter V.A.G 1526.
Specified value: 10 to 18 Ohms.
If specified value is not obtained.
- Replace the respective Valve -1- for camshaft adjustment -N205-/Valve -2- for camshaft adjustment -N208-.
- Read readiness code. If DTC memory was erased, readiness code must be generated again.
If the specified value is obtained, check voltage supply
Checking voltage supply of solenoid valves for camshaft adjustment
- Disconnect connector at respective solenoid valve.
- Connect V.A.G 1527 voltage tester to terminal 1 (B+) of connector and to engine Ground (GND) using cables from V.A.G 1594 connector test kit.
- Operate starter for a few seconds. Engine may also start up during this.
LED must light up.
If diode test lamp does not light up, the following tests must be performed:
- Check fuse for solenoid valves for camshaft adjustment.
If fuse is OK.
- Check wire connection from terminal 1 to Fuel Pump (FP) relay via fuse for continuity.
If voltage test lamp lights up, check activation.
Checking activation of valves for camshaft adjustment
- Disconnect connector at respective solenoid valve.
- Connect V.A.G 1527 voltage tester using cables from V.A.G 1594 connector test kit to sockets 1 (B+) and 2 of connector for respective solenoid valve.
- Operate starter for a few seconds. Engine may also start up during this.
Diode test lamp must blink during activation of camshaft adjustment.
If LED lights up continuously.
- Check wire connection of socket 2 of respective connector of solenoid valve for camshaft adjustment for short circuit to Ground (GND).
If voltage test lamp does not blink.
- Check wire connection.
Checking wire connection
- Connect V.A.G1598/31 test box at wiring harness to Engine Control Module (ECM), do not connect ECM.
- Check wire connection of respective connector for solenoid valve for camshaft adjustment for open circuit in wire as well as short circuit to B+.
Valve -1- for camshaft adjustment -N205-
2-pin connector at V.A.G1598/31 test box, socket
wiring harness, terminal
2 115
Wire resistance: max. 1.5 Ohms
- Repair short circuit in wiring or open circuit in wiring if necessary.
Valve -2- for camshaft adjustment -N208-
2-pin connector at V.A.G1598/31 test box, socket
wiring harness, terminal
2 120
Wire resistance: max. 1.5 Ohms
- Repair short circuit in wiring or open circuit in wiring if necessary.
If there is neither an open circuit in wiring nor a short circuit, replace Engine Control Module (ECM).
- Read readiness code. If DTC memory was erased, readiness code must be generated again.
- If no malfunction was recognized for all previous tests, replace the respective mechanical camshaft adjuster.
