Instrument Cluster, Removing And Installing

NOTE:
- Do not disassemble instrument cluster.
- Instrument clusters contain no field serviceable components. Should malfunctions occur, replace complete instrument cluster.
- If instrument cluster is to be replaced, the replacement instrument cluster must be coded according vehicle equipment and market application, and the vehicle odometer reading must be transferred as well. These operations must be carried out using the VAS 5051 in operating mode "Guided Fault Finding".

Special tools and workshop equipment required







- Trim removal wedge 3409







- Hook 3438

Removing
- Using power adjustment mechanism, pull steering wheel out completely and lock in lowest position.

CAUTION:
- Switch off all electrical consumers.
- Switch ignition off and remove ignition key.







- Use wedge 3409 to carefully detach trim from instrument panel -arrows-.
- Open coin tray.







- Slide trim for coin tray to left out of fastener -arrow- and detach.
- Open glove compartment.







- Starting above glove compartment, use wedge 3409 to carefully detach trim panel with switch module from instrument panel.
- Unplug connector.







- Turn knurled wheel -2- of left air vent completely upward.
- Release retaining tabs -1- upward using a small screwdriver.
- Pull out air vent from panel, alternating at left and right using Hook 3438.

NOTE: If necessary, retaining tabs may be released in several steps.

- Disconnect electrical connectors at air vent.
- Repeat procedure at right air vent, next to instrument cluster.







- Remove screws -arrows-.

NOTE: Use adhesive tape to affix cloth to protect steering column trim and steering arms.

- Pull instrument cluster cover off slightly from instrument cluster.
- Disconnect electrical connectors from instrument cluster cover.
- Engage turn signal indicator switch in lower switch position.
- Actuate flick wipe function and detach trim for instrument cluster cover in this wiper switch position.







- Release left and right catches -arrows- and detach instrument cluster slightly from instrument panel.
- Swivel instrument cluster to rear and pull it out to left between steering wheel and instrument panel.







- Press securing catch -1-, turn retaining bracket in direction of arrow and disconnect connector.
- Remove instrument cluster.

Installing
Install in reverse order of removal, noting the following.
