Subject: 2004 Model Year Audi A8 L Vehicles
Update Multi Media Interface (MMI) and Navigation System Software
This is to inform you of the initiation of a customer satisfaction campaign involving some 2004 model Audi A8 L vehicles.
Problem Description
Audi has identified a manufacturing quality imperfection in the NAV-DVD that necessitates updating the Multi Media Interface (MMI) and/or the navigation system software.
Remedial Action
Perform Multi Media Interface (MMI) software update using the latest version CD ROM and install latest version (NAV-DVD - Version 4) navigation system software.
Vehicle Identification Number Range
The vehicles affected by this action are within the following number range:
Please note that the above VINs represent the lowest and highest serial numbers of affected vehicles. Use of the OTIS campaign inquiry system will allow you to determine whether or not a particular vehicle, within the above VIN range, requires the corrective work.
NOTE:
It is recommended that a screen print of the OTIS View Campaign inquiry screen be attached to the repair order. Audi will not reimburse under this action any duplicate repair work or a repair outside the VIN range.
Owner Notification Mailing
Audi notified all known owners of affected vehicles directly by first-class mail on or about October 8, 2004.
Campaign Expiration
This action is effective through October 8, 2006, after which time it will expire and will no longer be performed as a customer satisfaction campaign.
Vehicle Allocation
You were previously provided a computer list containing the VINs including the owner names and addresses of vehicles that, according to our records, were sold by your dealership and required this action to be performed.
Parts Information
The navigation system DVD, NAV-DVD Version 4, part number W531257002A, must be ordered by dealers from NAVTEQ at (866) 345-AUDI. The vehicle identification number must be provided at the time the order is placed.
Special Tool
The MMI Update CD ROM, literature number W42A8317, was provided to dealers, free of charge. Additional copies may be ordered from the Volkswagen Technical Literature Ordering Center.
Time Requirements/ Reimbursement
To ensure prompt and proper payment, be sure to enter, immediately upon completion of the repair work, the applicable reimbursement code listed below. Claims will only be paid for vehicles that show the JF code in the OTIS View Campaign inquiry screen on the day of repair. It is therefore recommended that a screen print of the OTIS View Campaign inquiry screen be attached to the repair order.
JF Data Entry Procedure
For vehicles that, according to your information, cannot be corrected or reached, and one of the codes below best describe the reason, please enter one of the applicable codes into the system:
- JF 20 Customer Refused Repairs
- JF 30 Total Loss
- JF 40 Vehicle Stolen
- JF 50 Vehicle Exported
Campaign Verification
For verification, always check the OTIS View Campaign inquiry screen. The OTIS system is the only binding campaign inquiry and verification source; other sources are not valid and may result in non-payment of a claim.

Please inform and/or provide a copy of this communication to every person in your dealership who has campaign-related responsibilities, including parts and accounting personnel.

- Battery Charger - PSC-300 or equivalent
- MMI Update CD (W42A8317)
Work Sequence:
Section A - MMI and Navigation Software Level Information
MMI
- An MMI software update is required in all vehicles
Navigation
- Check label on DVD in drive unit located in trunk on left side:
- If DVD has a green label, it needs to be updated
- If DVD is Version 2 or 3 -arrow- with a black label, it needs to be updated
- If DVD is Version 4 -arrow- with a dark gray label, navigation software update is not required
- Make note of DVD Version
- Proceed to Section B
Section B - Preparation
NOTE:
If a problem is encountered during MMI or Navigation software updating, the Audi Dealer Technician Helpline is available for assistance
- Remove all CDs from glove box CD changer and Navigation DVD from unit in the trunk
- Connect battery charger (PSC-300 or equivalent) to the vehicle
Check and record Adaptation ("Channel 1") value as follows:
- Connect the VAS 5051/5052 and select "Vehicle Self-Diagnosis" mode
- Select Address word "07 - Display -/ control unit"
- On the control unit screen, select forward arrow (>) in the bottom right corner of the screen
- Select function "10 - Adaptation"
- Input "1" on keypad to select "Channel 1"
- Press the "Q" button to confirm
- Record the "Channel 1" value
- Go to vehicle self diagnosis and check all control modules for DTCs by selecting Gateway installation list -arrow-
- If any permanent DTCs are stored, follow guided fault finding (GFF) and resolve these concerns before proceeding
(Not part of campaign reimbursement)
- Disconnect VAS 5051/5052 from vehicle
NOTE:
- To exit or enter vehicle during the update, manually close driver's door latch first
- DO NOT OPERATE doors or trunk lid during the MMI update
- Switch all electrical consumers to "OFF" position (lights, telephone, wipers, climate control, etc.)
- Switch ignition "OFF" and remove key from ignition lock
- Proceed to Section C
Section C - MMI Software Update
- Press and hold ON/OFF knob -arrow A- to turn MMI "ON"
- Press center control knob -arrow B- to proceed past disclaimer screen
- Press load button on glove box CD Changer and insert MMI update CD (W42A8317) into first slot (label side up) and wait at least 10 seconds for system to recognize the CD
- If necessary, press RADIO button -arrow C- to activate the radio
- Press and hold SETUP and RETURN buttons (arrows D1 & D2) until MMI screen changes to "Current Config."
NOTE:
SETUP button should be pushed slightly before RETURN button
- MMI screen will display "SW Update" in lower right corner -arrow-
- Press lower right control button -arrow- to begin software update process
- MMI screen will change to "Download server" display and "CD-ROM" entry will be highlighted
- Press center control knob to select highlighted entry and MMI screen will change to "Reading Meta Information" display
- Wait at least 20 seconds while "Reading Meta Information" is carried out
- MMI screen will change to "Release H2_D3_US_XXXX (or similar)" display and "Standard" entry will be highlighted
- Press center control knob to select highlighted entry
- MMI screen will change to "Standard" and list of MOST components will appear
- Rotate center control knob counterclockwise to move cursor -arrow- on MMI screen downward until "Start download" is highlighted
- When "Start download" is highlighted, press center control knob to select highlighted entry
- Rotate center control knob counterclockwise to move cursor on MMI screen downward until "OK" is highlighted
- When "OK" is highlighted, press center control knob to select highlighted entry and download process will begin - Please wait
NOTE:
- DO NOT touch any controls at this time
- The MMI screen will change displays many times during the update process
- There may be long pauses between screen changes
- When the new software is loaded, MMI screen will display "Starting applications"
Informational step only
- If no progress appears for at least ten minutes while the blocks are being read or programmed:
- Perform a 3-fingered reset by simultaneously pressing all three buttons shown -arrows- (Do not eject Update CD)
- Screen will return to beginning
- Perform procedure again until Run download (previous illustration) appears and continue from there
- Wait until all devices have been initialized
- This MMI screen will change to a "Standard" screen once all devices have been initialized
- Rotate center control knob counterclockwise to move cursor on MMI screen downward until "Restart MMI" is highlighted
NOTE:
- Some MMI components have not been updated at this point in the updating process
- The MMI update process must be performed again
- When "Restart MMI" is highlighted, press center control knob to select highlighted entry and wait for up to 2 minutes until MMI screen turns off (goes black)
NOTE:
For remainder of MMI updating procedure, different MMI screens from previous screens will be shown
- MMI screen will change to "Download Server" display and "CD ROM" entry will be highlighted
- Press center control knob to select highlighted entry and MMI screen will change to "Reading Meta information"
- Wait at least 20 seconds for "Reading Meta information" to be completed
- MMI screen will change to "Release H2_D3_US_XXXX (or similar)" display and "Standard" entry will be highlighted
- Press center control knob to select highlighted entry and MMI screen will change to "Standard" and a list of MOST components will appear
- Rotate center control knob counterclockwise to move cursor on MMI screen downward until "Start download "is highlighted
- Press center control knob to select highlighted entry and MMI screen will change to a screen reminding: not to use electrical consumers
- Rotate center control knob counterclockwise to move cursor on MMI screen downward until "OK" is highlighted
- Press center control knob to select highlighted entry and download process begins again
NOTE:
- Progress of each component will be shown
- Please wait until all devices have been initialized
- This screen is displayed when all devices have been initialized
- Rotate center control knob counterclockwise to move cursor on MMI screen downward until "Restart MMI" is highlighted
- Press center control knob to select highlighted entry
- Wait 2 minutes and MMI screen will eventually turn off and close itself
- Proceed to Section D
Section D - MMI Update Verification
After passing disclaimer screen:
- Press and hold SETUP and RETURN buttons until MMI screen changes
NOTE:
MMI screen must display "SW Update" in lower right corner
- Press lower right control button to enter "SW Update" mode and MMI screen will change to "CD ROM" display
- Rotate center control knob counterclockwise to move cursor on MMI screen downward until "CD ROM" is highlighted
- Press center control knob to select highlighted entry and MMI screen will change to "Meta Information" display
- Wait at least 20 seconds while "Meta Information" is being read then MMI screen will change to "Standard" display
- Rotate center control knob counterclockwise to move cursor on MMI screen downward until "Standard "is highlighted
- Press the center control knob to select the highlighted entry and a list of MOST components will appear
- All entries except NAV should have "N (>)" displayed and a digital clock will be displayed at the bottom of the screen
- Press the "Return" button 4 times to exit the MMI Update Verification
- Remove the MMI Update CD (W42A8317) from the CD changer
- Proceed to Section E only if Navigation DVD update is required; otherwise, go to Section F
Section E - Navigation DVD Update
- With MMI turned ON, activate navigation mode by pressing "NAV" button -arrow-
- If not already removed, press eject button to remove current navigation DVD from drive unit
NOTE:
Drive unit is located in the trunk on left side
- Wait until message "Insert Navigation DVD" is displayed on MMI screen; insert new Navigation DVD (W531257002A) into drive unit
NOTE:
- A screen note for navigation initialization progress may appear (same screen shown in the 4th step down)
- If this occurs, next 3 screens in this update process will not be seen
- Please wait until initialization is finished
- MMI screen will change to "Update Navigation" display
- Rotate center control knob counterclockwise to move cursor on MMI screen downward until "Yes" is highlighted
- Press center control knob to select highlighted entry
- Software update progress screen will be shown
NOTE:
Progress percentage displayed does not increase at a constant rate
- When "Update is complete" appears, press RETURN button and MMI system will reboot
- In some cases, after passing the disclaimer screen, the MMI will display a message that it is being initialized
- After initialization standard, Navigation MMI screen will be displayed
NOTE:
The previous version Navigation DVDs will no longer work in this vehicle
- Proceed to Section F
Section F - Coding and Adaptation Check
NOTE:
With new MMI software, it is now necessary to specify the telephone system in the vehicle
- Insert key and turn ignition to "ON" position
- Connect VAS 5051/5052 and enter Vehicle Self-Diagnosis mode
- Select address word "07 - Display-/control unit"
- Check control unit coding, it should be 103 -arrow-, if not, then code to 103
- Press forward arrow (>) button at bottom right corner of screen
- Select Function "10" -Adaptation"
- Input "12" on keypad to select "Channel 12"
- Select the "Q" button to confirm
- "Channel 12" value should be 4; if not, use keyboard button and change value to 4
- Select "Q " button to confirm
- Select "Save" and "Accept" buttons to record change
- Return to "Diagnosis function" screen by using back arrow (<) button at bottom left corner of screen
- Select Function "10 - Adaptation"
- Input "111" on the keypad to select "Channel 111"
- Change "Channel 111" value from 0 to 1
- Select "Save" then "Accept" buttons to record change
NOTE:
MMI system will reboot once
- If any error message is displayed, press cancel
- Return to "Diagnosis function" screen
- Select address word "07 - Display-/ control unit"
- Input "1" on keypad to select "Channel 1"
- Select "Q" button to confirm
- Compare "Channel 1" value with previously recorded value found in preparation Section B
- If "Channel 1" value is same as previously recorded, proceed to Final System Check
- If "Channel 1" value is not same as previously recorded, change "Channel 1" value to previously recorded value using the keyboard button, then press "Save" and "Accept" buttons to record the change
- Proceed to Section G
Section G - Update of Data Bus On Board Diagnostic Interface
Diagnostic Interface
- Insert Update CD (W42A8317) in CD ROM drive of VAS 5051/5052
- Connect the VAS 5051/5052 to the vehicle and select "Vehicle Self diagnosis"
- Select vehicle system"19 - Diagnostic interface for data-bus" -J533-
- If function "Update programming" is displayed, select it and follow update procedure
- "Program can be carried out" screen is displayed, press the forward arrow (>) button at bottom right corner of screen
- After "Update programming" is complete, check that software version 0040 is displayed -arrow-
- Select "Go to" and exit
- Proceed to Section H
Section H - Final System Check
- Go to vehicle self diagnosis and erase all sporadic DTCs in Gateway-installation list
- If a permanent fault code in the DSP Bose Amplifier - Address word "47 - sound system for component protection" is encountered, follow steps in Guided Fault Finding to disable component protection of Amplifier, otherwise continue
- Check MMI operation in all modes (Radio, CD, NAV, etc.)
- Attempt an OnStar(R) telephone call (blue button): radio should mute and green OnStar(R) light should flash
NOTE:
The navigation may be reinitialized
- Proceed to Section H - Data Transfer
Section H - Data Transfer
- Activate radio menu by pressing radio function selector button
- Select "Guided Fault Finding" on VAS 5051/5052
- Select "Audi", then select "Audi A8 2004>
- Select engine version, press forward (>) at bottom right corner of screen and follow directions given in display
NOTE:
- The "vehicle system test" will not be carried out, during which all fault memories will be read
- If applicable, follow directions given in the display
- After all control units have been read, press forward (>) arrow button at bottom right corner of screen
- Select "Go To" then select "Function / Component Selection" -arrow-
- Select "Software Version Management" -arrow-
- Highlight "Problem-related hardware and software update" and press forward (>) arrow button at bottom right corner of screen
- Select "Action Code: Direct Input" and press forward (>) arrow button at bottom right corner of screen
- In next screen, confirm option "Own test plan" - "Direct Input: campaign code for problem update" by pressing forward (>) arrow button at bottom right corner of screen
- Press "display input keys" button for activating the screen keypad
- Enter code "D3USMMI317" and press Q button to confirm, then press forward (>) arrow button at bottom right corner of screen
- Data from vehicle control units will then be read
- Enter your GeKo user ID and password
- Connect VAS 5051/5052 to corresponding hardware on your online network and press the DONE button
- The data will be transferred and processed
- A message will be received from the Software Versions Management
NOTE:
Disregard any message about modules needing updates
- Press "Go to" button
- Select "Exit" to end the guided fault finding
- Select "Exit" button to confirm exiting guided fault finding
- The fault memory of all control units will automatically be erased
- If the following message appears, press "Cancel" button
- Answer questions that appear on the screen
- Send your answers on line
- Switch ignition to "OFF" position
- Check navigation system for vehicle location by pressing "NAV" button to switch to navigation menu
- Activate map display via bottom right control button located next to rotary push button:
- If map appears the vehicle position is correct, the navigation system has been initialized; no further work is required
- If arrow appears on an empty map, place vehicle outside for 5 to 10 minutes with the MMI switched "ON"
- The update programming is completed
- Disconnect VAS 5051/5052 and remove battery charger
- Replace customer's CDs in CD changer
- Properly dispose of removed navigation DVD
