Driveshaft

Special tools, testers and auxiliary items required

Alignment Fixture-4W Dr.Shaft (3139)

Counterhold tool Touareg V10 (T10172) and Adapters (T10172/5)

Engine/Transmission Jack (V.A.G 1383 A) with Universal Transmission Support (V.A.G 1359/2)

Removing

See notes, refer to => [ Driveshaft Overview ]

The driveshaft should only be worked on a two column lift.

- Separate the exhaust system at the clamping sleeves - 1 - and - 2 -.

- Remove both cross braces - A - and - B -.

- Remove rear section of exhaust system - C -.

- Remove heat shield - arrows -.

- Remove the bolts - arrows - and secure the main catalytic converter to the underbody.

Do not bend the decoupling element in the front exhaust pipe more than 10°, otherwise it will get damaged.

- Remove heat shield - A - from transmission - arrows -.

- Remove the rear final drive cover - arrows A and B -, if equipped.

- Check whether there is a marking (colored marking) on driveshaft and at flange/driveshaft at rear final drive - arrows A and B -.

- If these markings are not present, mark in color the position of driveshaft flange - arrow A - to rear final drive - arrow B -.

- Attach (3139) with spacers (3139/4) and tighten plastic nuts.

Never lay the assembly tool on the balance plates.

- Remove the bolts - arrows - for intermediate bearing.

- Remove the bolts connecting the driveshaft to the transmission using the (T10172) and (T10172/5).

- Remove driveshaft from transmission and support it using (V.A.G 1383 A).

- Remove the bolts - 1 - (quantity: 6) from the rear CV joint.

- Use the (T10172) and (T10172/5).

- Remove driveshaft.

Always store and transport a driveshaft fully extended only.

Installing

Installation is in reverse order of removal. Observe the following when doing so:

Remove any old or dried-up high temperature grease from the CV joints and the driveshaft flanges. Fill with the exact same amount of high temperature grease (G 052 133 A2).

Clean any locking fluid still inside the threaded holes in the flange shafts for the transmission driveshaft and rear final drive. Use a thread cutter to clean the holes. Otherwise the bolts could break off when being installed.

After disconnecting driveshaft from rear final drive, an additional balance washer (thick washer) that may be located between shim and bolt may not be reinstalled.

Always replace (self-locking) securing bolts for driveshaft.

Note installation position of driveshaft: Center CV joint is located behind intermediate bearing in direction facing the rear final drive.

Make sure that the markings on flange for driveshaft - arrow A - and for rear final drive - arrow B - line up.

If a new driveshaft is installed and the color marking made by the factory on the rear final drive flange is no longer visible, then the radial run-out on the flange/driveshaft must be measured and the color marking on the new driveshaft must be made to match the new marking on the flange/driveshaft. Refer to => [ Radial Run-Out on Flange/Driveshaft, Measuring and Identifying ] Testing and Inspection.

- Replace seals for driveshaft at transmission/rear final drive flange. Remove grease from sealing surfaces and adhere new seals.

- Attach the driveshaft to the rear final drive and to the transmission with new bolts - arrows -.

- Install the bolts - arrows - just far enough so that the intermediate bearing can still be moved.

- Tighten the driveshaft bolts - 1 - on the rear final drive - 5 - => [ Hex Bolt ] .

- Use the (T10172) and (T10172/5).

- Tighten the bolts on the front of the driveshaft to the tightening specification - 5 - => [ Hex Bolt ] .

- Use the (T10172) with the (T10172/5).

- Remove (3139).

Align Intermediate Bearing as Follows:

- Slightly loosen bolt for intermediate bearing.

- Slide driveshaft toward front until it stops and mark position of intermediate bearing on the body - arrow A -.

- Slide driveshaft toward rear until it stops and mark position of intermediate bearing on the body - arrow B -.

- Slide driveshaft toward the right until it stops and mark position of intermediate bearing on the body - arrow 1 -.

- Slide driveshaft toward the left until it stops and mark position of intermediate bearing on the body - arrow 2 -.

- Align driveshaft - arrow C - and - arrow 3 -.

The intermediate bearing must be centered between markings - arrow A - and - arrow B -, and - arrow 1 - and - arrow 2 -.

- Tighten bolts of intermediate bearing to tightening specification - 8 - => [ Hex Bolt ] .

Continuation:

- Install heat shield above intermediate bearing - arrows -.

- Remove heat shield - A - - arrows -.

- Install the rear final driver cover, if equipped. Tightening specifications - arrows A - - 16 - => [ Combi-bolt ] and - arrows B - - 13 - => [ Hex Bolts ] .

- Install and adjust exhaust system free of stress.

- Install both cross braces - A - and - B -.
