Tire Pressure Monitoring System
Tire pressure monitoring system
Introduction
The tire pressure monitoring system monitors the tire pressure in all four tires while the vehicle is operating, and warns the driver of low tire pressure by displaying yellow or red symbols in the Auto-Check control.
The system operates with the aid os sensors at the wheels. The messages from these sensors are transmitted to the tire pressure monitoring system by wireless.
So that the tire pressure monitoring system operates correctly, tire pressure should be checked at regular intervals, adjusted if necessary and saved in the proper setting (recommended pressure).
FMVSS 138
The following points describe how the tire pressure monitoring system differs from U.S. Federal Motor Vehicle Safety Standard (FMVSS) 138:
- It is possible to switch the system on and off.
- If there is a loss of tire pressure of more then 3 psi (0.2 bar) a, yellow warning signal will appear in the driver information display. If the loss is more than 6 psi (0.4 bar), then a red warning signal will appear. There is no warning/indicator light in the instrument cluster to indicate loss of tire pressure.
- It can take up to 30 minutes to store new tire pressure in the memory.
Warning!
Do not adjust tire pressure when tire temperature is excessive. This could lead to serious tire damage and even cause the tire to burst, with the additional danger of an accident.
Tips
The monitoring system helps the driver monitor tire pressure, but it does not release the driver from his or her responsibility to maintain proper tire pressure.
Severe loss of tire pressure
The red symbol appears in the event in the of a severe loss of tire pressure.
If the tire pressure deviates from the specified pressure by more than 6 psi (0.4 bar), the red tire symbol appears in the Auto-Check display along with a message, in this case "tire pressure" and the identification of the affected tire.
When the red tire symbol appears, immediately stop vehicle and inspect the tire responsible for the warning.
Moderate loss of tire pressure
The yellow symbol appears in the event of a moderate loss of tire pressure.
If the pressure in the tire deviates from the specified pressure by more the 3 psi (0.2 bar), a yellow tire symbol appears in the Auto-Check display, along with a code identifying which tire is involved.
FL - Front left wheel
FR - Front right wheel
RL - Rear left wheel
RR - Rear right wheel
If you see the yellow symbol, check and correct the tire pressure as soon as possible.
Store the tire pressure
In order for the tire pressure monitoring system to work, the specified pressures must be re-saved each time a wheel is changed.
You must perform the following steps in order for the system to function properly:
Check and adjust the tire pressure
- Check and correct the pressures in all the vehicles's tires (including the spare) to conform to the information provided on the tire pressure label. The label is located on the inside of the fuel filler flap.
Store the tire pressure
- Turn on the ignition.
- Press the "Menu" button to open the start menu.
- Move the selection arrow to "Set" by rotating the turn/push knob.
- Press the turn/push knob. The settings menu appears.
- Move the selection arrow to "Tire pressure" by rotating the turn/push knob.
- Press the turn/push knob. The submenu "Tire pressure" appears.
- Move the selection arrow to "Stop pressures!".
- Press the turn/push knob. A check mark appears. The system reports that the store request was saved with "The current tire pressure will be saved."
- Move the selection arrow to back.
- Press the turn/push knob to leave the tire pressure menu.
When "Store pressure!" is initiated the system automatically starts the learning procedure.
The "Store pressures!" procedure must be launched after every change in air pressure and after every wheel change. The system does not know the specification pressure until the procedure is complete so that it can report a loss of pressure.
Learning process
After the specification pressures are stored, the learning procedure starts.
The learning procedure is launched by storing the air pressures. It is completely automatic and normally you never notice it. It takes several minutes while you are driving.
The system will learn the tire pressures set on the vehicle and will check to see if any tires were changed.
During this learning phase, the system will be operable, but it will only issue a warning when the pressure in one or more tires (including the spare) deviates from the specified pressures by more the 6 psi (0.4 bar).
