Fig. 20 Location of automatic transmission control module -J217-:

The control module is located in front of the right-hand seat under the carpet in foot well.

Fig. 21 Removing automatic transmission control module -J217-:

Removing
^ Removing lower right A-pillar trim and right door sill trim piece.
^ Detach carpeting from inside of sill (right-side) below front door, and raise carpeting approximately 20 cm.
^ Unclip box at -A- by pulling it upward.

^ Unclip box at -B- as shown.
^ Unclip TCM from box (arrows).
^ Release catch on multi-pin connector and disconnect connector from TCM; Refer to Fig. 22

Installing:
Installation is the reverse of removal, with the following additional steps:

^ Check that clip -1- is properly secured:

Fig. 22 Installing automatic transmission control module -J217-:

^ Switch ignition off and wait approximately 30 seconds.
^ Release connector by pressing catch in direction of arrow.
Installation is the reverse of removal.

Fig. 23 Engine control module:

Location: in electronics box (E-box) in plenum chamber (left side).

Removing and Installing control module

Fig. 24 Data Link Connector (DLC):

Location: The Data Link Connector (DLC) is located under drivers knee bar to left of steering wheel.
^ Connect VAS5051 tester to vehicle with VAS5051/1 diagnostic wire. Alternately, VAG 1551 Scan Tool can also be attached using VAG 1551/3 adapter.
^ Enter address word "02 transmission electronics" and switch through until "selecting function XX" appears on display.

Fig. 25 Valve body:

Location: The valve body is bolted to the underside of transmission housing inside the oil pan.
The solenoid valves -N88-, -N89-, -N90-, -N91-, -N92-, -N93- and -N94- are attached to the valve body. The solenoid valves -N91-, -N92-, -N93and -N94 are also referred to as pressure control valves 1 (-N215-, 2 N216-), 3 (-N217-) and 4 (-N218-).

Removing and Installing valve body

A differentiation is made between two types of transmissions:
^ For transmissions with hydraulic regulation -E1 7-, the transmission input speed sensor (inductive sensor) is secured to the underside of the valve body.
^ For transmissions with hydraulic regulation -E1 8/2-, the transmission input speed sensor (camshaft position sensor) is secured behind valve body at transmission housing.
Information about which transmission is installed:

Fig. 26 Wiring harness with Integrated transmission oil temperature sender (ATF) -G93-:

Location: The wiring harness is secured to valve body.
The wiring harness can be removed with the valve body removed and the transmission installed.

Location: The multi-function switch -1 - is located on left at transmission; Multi-pin connector for multi-function switch -arrow-.

Removing and Installing multl4unction switch

Fig. 28 Tiptronic switch -F189-:

Installation location: tiptronic switch is integrated into conductor strip of symbol insert which is located in cover of shift mechanism.

Note: This switch is not installed on shift mechanisms without Tiptronic function.

It consists of 3 ha4-effect sensors (-A-, -B-, -C- ), which are activated via a magnet on the lateral gate cover of gate cover.
A - Sensor for down-shift
B - Sensor for Tiptronic-recognition
C - Sensor for up-shift

Fig. 29 Tiptronic switch -F189-, continued:

^ If malfunctions occur, the switch for tiptronic must be checked for interference in Read measuring value block.
In case of interference, it must first be checked whether the magnet at lateral gate cover -C- of gate cover is properly attached, if necessary, replace gate cover. The symbol insert with integrated conductor strip may only be replaced after checking the wires. For vehicles with tiptronic-sport steering wheel, the buttons at steering wheel and its wire connections must also be checked.

Fig. 30 Transmission speed sender -G38-:

Location: The transmission speed sender is located at rear right in transmission. It is also referred to as the sensor for transmission output RPM -G195,

Removing and Installing transmission speed sender

Fig. 31 Transmission Input speed sender -G182-:

Installation location:
On transmissions with hydraulic regulation -E17-, the transmission input speed sensor (inductive sensor) is secured to the underside of the valve body (see illustration). On these transmissions the sensor is an inductive sensor.

Fig.32 Transmission Input speed sender -GI82-, continued:

On transmissions with hydraulic regulation -E18/2-, the transmission input speed sensor -A- is secured behind valve body at transmission housing. On these transmissions the sensor is a hall effect sensor.

Fig. 34 Throttle valve potentiometer -G69:

Location: integrated in throttle valve control module -J338- (gasoline engine) -arrow-.

Note: On TDI-engines and on engines with E-gas, the throttle position sensor (-G79, -G185) takes over the function of the throttle valve potentiometer.

Fig. 37 Kick down switch -F8-:

Location: gasoline engine without E-Gas:
Integrated in accelerator pedal cable, in plenum chamber, behind bulkhead -arrow-.

Location: TDI engines and engines with E-gas:

The kick down switch is integrated in the throttle position sensor (-G79, -G185).

A learning procedure must be performed for the shift point of the kick down switch for TDI engines and engines with E-gas if the throttle position sensor (-G79, -G185) is removed, the engine control module is exchanged or the battery is disconnected.

Kick down-switch removing and Installing
^ To remove and install the kick down switch, the accelerator pedal cable must be removed and installed and then adjusted or the throttle position sensor -G79, -G1 85) must be replaced. accelerator pedal mechanism, repairing Front and All Wheel Drive

Location: Brake light switch is located on pedal cluster.
Removing and Installing brake light switch

Note: For engine with E-gas, the brake light signal is transmitted from engine control module to transmission control module via the CAN-Bus.
