Safety Precautions When Working on Fuel Supply System

Safety Precautions When Working On Fuel Supply System

WARNING: Fuel system is under pressure. Before opening system, place rags around the connection. Then release pressure by carefully loosening connection.

CAUTION:
- On vehicles equipped with Audi Telematics by OnStar (R), switch-off the emergency (back-up) battery for the Telematic/Telephone Control Module prior to disconnecting vehicle battery. Use must use the VAS 5051 or VAS 5052.
- The battery must only be disconnected and connected with the ignition switched off, since the Engine Control Module (ECM) can otherwise be damaged.

The following steps should be taken before beginning work on the fuel supply:
- Disconnect battery Ground (GND) strap with the ignition switched off.
- Open fuel filler cap briefly and then close again.
When removing and installing components from full or partially full fuel tanks, the following must be observed:
- The fuel tank may only be partially full. How much fuel can remain in the fuel tank may be read in the respective work description. Empty fuel tank if necessary.
- Before starting work, switch on exhaust extraction system and place an extraction hose close to the installation opening of fuel tank to extract escaping fuel fumes. If no exhaust extraction system is available, a radial fan (as long as motor is not in air flow) with a displacement greater than 15 cu.m/h can be used.
- Prevent fuel from contacting skin. Wear fuel-resistant gloves.
