Work sequence
- Remove side trim on left of luggage compartment.
- Disconnect connector (arrow) at exhaust flap valve.
Checking internal resistance
- Connect multimeter to valve for resistance measurement.
- Specification: 22 ... 30c°
If reading does not match specification:
- Replace valve.
Checking power supply
- Connect multimeter for voltage measurement to contact 1 and Ground.
- Start engine.
- Specification: approximately. battery voltage
If reading does not match specification:
- Check for open circuit in wiring and repair if necessary.
If reading matches specification:
Checking actuation
- Connect vehicle diagnostic, testing and information system VAS 5051 and select vehicle system "01 - Engine electronics" from list. Ignition must be on.
- Connect voltage tester V.A.G 1527B between contacts 1 and 2.
Indicated on VAS 5051:
- From list -1- select diagnostic function "0.3 - Final control diagnosis".
- Keep touching - key until Exhaust flap valve 1 -N3231- is actuated.
- LED must flash slowly
Note: Voltage testers with a low current input do not go out completely between actuation of engine control module, but rather continue to glow slightly and become distinctly brighter on actuation.
- Terminate function "0.3 - Final control diagnosis" by touching - key.
- Touch "06 - End of output".
If LED does not react as described:
- Connect test box V.A.G 1598/31 to wiring harness connectors. Actual engine control module is not to be connected. Connect Ground clip of test box to Ground (not shown in Fig.).
CAUTION: Always observe the test conditions and select the required measuring range before connecting test leads to prevent damaging electronic components.
- Check for open circuit in the following wiring:
- Eliminate open circuit in wiring/short circuit if necessary.
