Cylinder Head
Head Bolt reuse/replace
- Replace Cylinder Head Bolts
- The long cylinder head bolts are inserted in the middle bores in the cylinder head.
- Re-tightening of the cylinder head bolts is not necessary on completion of repair work.

Torque & Sequence




Cylinder head bolts
1st stage 30 Nm
2nd stage 50 Nm
3rd stage 90° (1/4 turn) further
4th stage 90° (1/4 turn) further

Intake Manifold Torque & Sequence
Intake manifold to cylinder head 13 Nm
Intake manifold support to intake manifold 20 Nm
Throttle valve control module -J338- to intake manifold 10 Nm
Vacuum reservoir to intake manifold 5 Nm
Guide tube for oil dipstick to intake manifold 5 Nm

Camshaft Bearing Cap Torque & Sequence
Bearing cap to cylinder head 5 Nm +45 deg
NOTE: Replace bolts.
NOTE: 45 deg corresponds to one eighth turn




Install intake camshaft as follows:
1. Tighten bearing caps 5 and 9 alternately in a diagonal sequence and then tighten to final torque.
2. Tighten bearing caps 1 and 13.
3. Tighten bearing cap 7
4. Tighten bearing caps 3 and 11.
Install exhaust camshaft as follows:
1. Tighten bearing caps 6 and 10 alternately in a diagonal sequence and then tighten to final torque.
2. Tighten bearing caps 2 and 14.
3. Tighten bearing cap 8
4. Tighten bearing caps 4 and 12.
- Position camshafts in cylinder head to TDC for cylinder 1.

Main Bearing Cap Torque & Sequence
Crankshaft Main Bearing Caps 30 Nm + 180°
(1/2 turn) further

Rod Bearing Cap Torque & Sequence
Connecting Rod bolt 30 Nm + 90° (1/4 turn) further

Crankshaft Pulley Torque
Vibration damper to crankshaft 100 Nm + 90° (1,2)
1) Replace Bolt
2) 90° equals one quarter turn

Flywheel/Flex Plate Torque & Sequence
Dual-mass flywheel to crankshaft 60 Nm + 90° (1,2)
1) Replace bolt
2) 90° equals one quarter turn

Oil Pump Torque & Sequence
Oil Pump Housing 23 Nm
Sump to cylinder block 12 Nm
Sump to transmission 40 Nm

Exhaust Manifold Torque & Sequence
Exhaust manifold to cylinder head 23 Nm (1)
1) Replace nuts
Front exhaust pipe to exhaust manifold 25 Nm (1)
1) Replace nuts

Water Pump Torque & Sequence
Coolant Pump to cylinder block 8 Nm

Other Tightening Torques
Chain Sprockets to intermediate shaft 60 Nm + 90° (1,2)
1) Replace Bolt
2) 90° equals one quarter turn
Sealing flange to cylinder block 10 Nm
Guide rail to cylinder block 10 Nm
Pins for guide rail to cylinder block 10 Nm
Chain tensioner to cylinder block 8 Nm
Chain sprockets to intermediate shaft 60 Nm + 90° (1,2)
Camshaft adjuster to camshafts 60 Nm + 90° (1,2)
1) Replace bolt
2) 90° equals one quarter turn
Lower cover for timing chains to cylinder block 10 Nm
Upper cover for camshaft timing chain
M6 10 Nm
M8 23 Nm
Chain tensioner for camshaft timing chain to upper cover for timing chain 40 Nm
Cylinder head cover to cylinder head 10 Nm
Bracket for After-run coolant pump -V51- to cylinder block 20 Nm
Spark plugs in cylinder head 30 Nm
Valve timing housing to cylinder head 8 Nm
Oil drain plug 30 Nm
Oil filter bracket to cylinder block 23 Nm
Pulley to coolant pump 20 Nm
Thermostat housing to engine 10 Nm
Bracket for wiring harness to engine 10 Nm
Carrier to longitudinal member 10 Nm
Air cleaner housing to body 10 Nm
Connection to thermostat housing 10 Nm
