Leak Detection Pump (LDP) -V144-, Quick Check

Supersedes T.B. Group 20 Number 03-01 dated Feb. 28, 2003

Condition

Unnecessary replacement of LDP due to mis-diagnosed leakage.

Service

As long as the Leak Detection Pump -V144- is operational you can quickly diagnose it as OK or leaking using the following method.

Prior to checking the LDP:





^ Ensure that vacuum at vacuum hose to LDP item -2- on illustration 20-A175 is equal to vacuum at port (source) at throttle body.

- Connect the VAS 5051 or VAS 5052 Diagnostic tool.

- Start engine and run at idle only.

- From VAS 5051 Start-up screen, select "Vehicle self diagnosis".

- Select vehicle system "01 - Engine electronics".





- Select Diagnosis Function "04- Basic settings.

EVAP Canister Purge valve -N80-, checking

Note:
Purge valve check must be completed prior to checking LDP using "071" (see LDP -V144-, checking below).





- Input "070" on keypad.

- Press "Q" on keypad to confirm.

- Press "Activate" button.

After test completes:

^ VAS 5051 should indicate "TBV OK".

If test continues to indicate "TBV not OK":

- Replace EVAP Canister Purge valve -N80-.

- Repeat test.

If test continues to indicate "TBV OK:

- Proceed with following steps.

LDP -V144-, checking

- Locate LDP -V144- (see appropriate Repair Manual, Repair Group 20- "Leak Detection Pump (LDP) -V144-, removing and installing").





- Clamp off LDP outlet (EVAP side) -1- using Special Tool No. 3094 or equivalent.

- Remove fuel cap.

CAUTION!
Clamp only soft rubber lines when isolating a leak. To avoid risk of damage, never clamp hard plastic lines!

- Select the < button.





- Input"071" on keypad.

- Press "Q" on keypad to confirm.

- Press "Activate" button.

^ Pump should activate.

^ VAS 5051 should indicate "system OK".

- Repeat test several times to verify result.

Note:
You MUST remove and install the clamp (to release pressure), prior to repeating test.

If test continues to indicate "system OK":

^ Pump is OK (leak is not at the pump or hose connections at pump).

- Switch ignition OFF.

- Reinstall fuel cap.

- Test EVAP system for leaks using the KLI9210 EVAP Tester (see Repair Manual Repair Group 20.

If LDP fails test:

^ Pump or hose connection between pinched hose -1- and pump are not OK.





- Check and ensure hose -1- and/or connections between EVAP Canister and LDP are not leaking.

- Recheck using "071" again and verify that hose and connection are OK.

If hose connection(s) are NOT OK:

- Repair connection or replace hose -1- as necessary.

If hose and connection at pump are OK:

- Replace pump.

- Recheck using "071" again and verify that new LDP operates correctly.

- Reinstall fuel cap.

- Remove clamp and check entire EVAP system.

- Erase any stored DTCs.
