Rear final drive, removing
Special tools and workshop equipment required
^ Engine/transmission jack VAG1383 A
^ Special tool T10035
Removing
- Remove cover panel for fuel tank (at rear right) (arrows).
- Loosen clamp (arrows) on exhaust system and disconnect exhaust pipe.
- Unbolt rear right exhaust bracket.
- Detach exhaust from brackets.
Notes: Do not bend the flexible joint (de - coupling element) in the exhaust system more than 10Q, otherwise it could be damaged.
- Unbolt rear heat shield and exhaust bracket (arrows).
- Mark position of rear driveshaft tube on final drive flange with paint.
- Unbolt rear driveshaft tube with flexible coupling and vibration damper from rear final drive (arrows).
- Separate right - hand drive axle at flanges and tie - up between upper and lower transverse link.
- Separate left - hand drive axle at flanges and tie - up to lower transverse link.
- Remove bolts securing final drive to front mounting bracket (arrows).
- Remove bolts securing final drive mounting bracket to subframe with
- Place transmission jack VAG1383 A with universal mounting V.A.G 1359/2 under final drive only and support final drive.
- Remove bolts securing rear subframe on left and right - arrow A -.
- Remove bolts securing final drive rear mounting bracket on left and right - arrow B -
Notes: The illustration only shows one of the two securing bolts.
- Disconnect electrical connector from Haldex coupling (arrow -C-).
- Pull left and right vent pipes out of body member (arrow).
Notes: The illustration only shows the left vent pipe.
- Lower final drive slightly using transmission jack VAG1383 A and carefully pull final drive away from rear subframe, holding rear end of driveshaft.
- Put driveshaft down on heat shield.
Notes: Keep driveshaft straight; always store driveshaft extended.
- Lower final drive.
- Remove mounting bracket - A - if final drive is to be replaced or mounted on repair stand.
- Observe different sized securing bolts for final drive front mounting bracket.
Bolts - A -: M10 x 35
Bolt- B -: M10 x 50
- Align exhaust system free of stress.
- Fill up gear oil.
