Transmission, Removing
Special tools, testers and auxiliary items required
• Bracket (30 - 211 A)
• Engine/transmission jack (VAG 1383 A)
• Oil collecting and extracting device (VAG 1782)
• Adapter (T40058)
• Transmission support (T40173)
Procedure
- Observe the general repair information. Refer to => [ General Repair Information ] General Repair Information.
• All cable ties that are opened or cut open during removal must be replaced in the same positions during installation.
CAUTION!
Secure the vehicle so that it cannot tip over when the transmission is removed. The luggage compartment must be empty.
CAUTION!
Note the instructions for disconnecting the battery.
- Switch the ignition off.
• Release the parking brake before disconnecting the battery so that the driveshaft can still be rotated while it is being removed.
- Remove the luggage compartment floor trim.
- Disconnect the negative battery cable.
- Remove the starter.
- Remove the rear noise insulation by loosening the fasteners - 1 and 2 - and, if equipped the - arrow -.
- If equipped, remove the left and right noise insulation in the wheel housing - arrows -.
- Remove the bolts - arrows - and the left drive axle heat shield.
- Remove the left drive axle from transmission flange.
- Remove the bolt - 1 - and the Automatic Transmission Fluid (ATF) pipe bracket.
• Disregard - items 2 and 3 -.
• Observe the cleanliness rules when working on transmissions. Refer to => [ Clean Working Conditions ] Clean Working Conditions.
- Place the oil collecting and extracting device (V.A.G 1782) under the fittings.
- Loosen the fittings, disconnect the ATF pipes - 1 - and - 2 - on the right side of the transmission and move them to the side.
- Remove ATF pipes from the transmission.
- Seal off the pipes and openings on the transmission with clean plugs.
- Mark the ATF pipes to each other with a waterproof marker.
- Open both fittings - arrows - for the ATF pipes and pull them apart.
- Seal off the pipe openings with clean plugs.
- Insert the adapter (T40058) guide pin as follows:
• The larger diameter - arrow 1 - faces toward the engine.
• The small diameter - arrow 2 - faces toward the adapter.
- Counter hold the crankshaft using the adapter (T40058) to loosen the torque converter bolts.
• Turn the crankshaft only in the direction of engine rotation - arrow -.
- Remove the 3 torque converter bolts - arrow - through the opening for the starter; to do this, turn the crankshaft 120 degrees.
CAUTION!
There is a risk of destroying the transmission control module (mechatronic) with static discharge.
• Do not touch the contacts in the transmission connector with your hands.
- To discharge static electricity, touch the transmission housing (without wearing gloves).
- Disconnect the left electrical connector on the transmission by rotating the connection counterclockwise - arrow -.
- Disconnect the electrical connector - arrow - for the engine speed (RPM) sensor (G28).
- Remove the bolts - arrows - and the subframe crossbrace.
• Mark the installation position of the selector lever cable bracket.
- Remove the selector lever cable ball socket - 1 - from the selector shaft lever.
- Remove the bolts - arrows - for the selector lever cable bracket.
- Free up the selector lever cable.
- Loosen the clamping sleeves - 1 - and - 2 - and slide them to the rear.
- Remove the bolts - arrows - and the front crossmember.
- Install the bolts - arrows - for the left and right crossmember just a few turns and tie the front exhaust pipe to the side with cable ties - 1 - and - 2 -.
- Remove the bolts - arrows - and the driveshaft heat shield - A -.
- Remove the bolts which connect the driveshaft to the transmission.
- Push the driveshaft toward rear final drive. The Constant Velocity (CV) joints can be moved axially.
- Remove the transmission to engine bolts - 8, 9 and 10 -.
• Ignore - item A -.
- Position the engine/transmission jack (VAG 1383 A) with the universal mount (T40173) on the bottom of the transmission and secure it with a strap - 1 - as shown in the illustration.
- Remove the tunnel crossmember bolts - arrows -.
CAUTION!
For further steps, the lock carrier must be installed and it must not be in the service position. Radiator Support
- Loosen the bolts - arrows - for the torque support stop.
- Lower the transmission slightly using the engine and transmission holder (VAG 1383 A).
- Push the torque support stop upward and retighten the bolts.
• Adjusting the torque support stop prevents the engine from sinking down after removing the front transmission.
- Remove the transmission to engine bolts - 3 through 7 -.
• Ignore - item A -.
- Separate the transmission from the alignment sleeves and carefully lower it with the engine and transmission holder (VAG 1383 A).
- At the same time, push the torque converter with a screwdriver through the opening for the starter from the drive plate on the engine.
- Guide transmission out at an angle (rearward/downward).
CAUTION!
When lowering the transmission, make sure there is clearance to the drive axles.
- Using the bracket (30 - 211 A) secure the torque converter from falling out.
