Mode 6 Data

Diagnostic Modes 01 - 09

Diagnostic Mode 06 - Read Test Results for Specific Diagnostic Functions

The information provided in Modes 01 through 09 displays the various levels of emission related data that may be monitored, as well as the ability to retrieve and read stored DTC trouble codes, erase stored DTC trouble codes, generate readiness codes, and select the various PIDs and Test-IDs used within the modes to monitor the engine, and emission related component parameters.

Diagnostic Mode 06 makes it possible to retrieve test results for special components and systems which are continuously or not continuously monitored. If the diagnosis of a system is complete, the diagnostic result and the corresponding thresholds are saved and displayed in mode 06. This data remains saved (even with the ignition off) until either new diagnostic results become available or the DTC memory is erased.

The values of the individual test results must reach the specified value or must be within the min.- and max.- limits.

Test ID 01 - Catalytic Converter

Test Prerequisite

Coolant temperature must be at least 80°C => [ Diagnostic Mode 01 - Read Current System Data ] , Diagnostic mode 1: Check measured values; PID 5, Coolant temperature.

Procedure

- Connect diagnostic tester.

- Perform a 15 minute road test in the highest gear or in the highest driving mode on a level driving surface.

The following operating conditions must be met during this road test:

Engine speed approx. 1800 to 2200 RPM => [ Diagnostic Mode 01 - Read Current System Data ] , Diagnostic mode 1: Check measuring values; PID 12, engine rotations per minute (RPM)

Vehicle speed constant 90 km/h => [ Diagnostic Mode 01 - Read Current System Data ] , Diagnostic mode 1: Check measuring values; PID 13, Vehicle speed

Observe safety precautions that apply to road tests, refer to Repair Information.

- Let engine run at idle.

- Under address word 33, select "Diagnostic mode 6: Check test results of components that are not continuously monitored".

- Select the "Test-ID 01: Catalytic converter" off.

- Check specified values at idle.

Bank 1 = Cylinder bank 1, in direction of travel, right

Bank 2 = Cylinder bank 2, in direction of travel, left

- End diagnosis and switch ignition off.

If specified values are exceeded:

- Replace respective exhaust pipe with catalytic converter, refer to Repair Information.

Test ID 03 - Secondary Air Injection System

Test Prerequisites

There must not be any DTCs stored in DTC memory => [ Diagnostic Mode 03 - Read DTC Memory ] , Diagnostic mode 3: Check DTC memory.

Let vehicle stand for approx. 12 hours with engine switched off under the following conditions:

Intake air temperature 10 to 50° C => [ Diagnostic Mode 01 - Read Current System Data ] , Diagnostic mode 1: Check measured values; PID 15: Intake Air Temperature (IAT)

Coolant temperature approx. intake air temperature (10 to 50° C) => [ Diagnostic Mode 01 - Read Current System Data ] , Diagnostic mode 1: Check measured values; PID 5, Coolant temperature.

Procedure

- Connect diagnostic tester.

- Start engine and let run at least 15 minutes at idle.

- Under address word 33, select "Diagnostic mode 6: Check test results of components that are not continuously monitored".

- Select "Test-ID 03: Secondary Air Injection (AIR) system"

- Check specified values at idle.

Bank 1 = Cylinder bank 1, in direction of travel, right

Bank 2 = Cylinder bank 2, in direction of travel, left

- End diagnosis and switch ignition off.

If specified values are not reached:

- Check secondary air system for proper seal => [ Secondary Air Injection Combination Valve, Checking ] Component Tests (VAG Code Tests).

- Check Secondary Air Injection (AIR) Pump Motor (V101) => [ Secondary Air Injection Pump Motor, Checking ] Component Tests (VAG Code Tests)

Test ID 05 - Tank Ventilation System

Test Prerequisites

Coolant temperature must be 80 to 110° C => [ Diagnostic Mode 01 - Read Current System Data ] , Diagnostic mode 1: Check measured values; PID 5, Coolant temperature.

Throttle valve angle 12.0 to 16.0% => [ Diagnostic Mode 01 - Read Current System Data ] , Diagnostic mode 1: Check measured values; PID 17: Throttle valve position (absolute)

Procedure

- Connect diagnostic tester.

- Start engine and let run at least 15 minutes at idle.

- Under address word 33, select "Diagnostic mode 6: Check test results of components that are not continuously monitored".

- Select "Test-ID 05: Tank ventilation system".

- Check specified values at idle.

- End diagnosis and switch ignition off.

If specified values are not reached:

- EVAP canister system, checking for proper seal => [ EVAP System Diagnostic Leak Test, Performing ] Component Tests (VAG Code Tests).

- Leak detection pump (LDP) (V144), checking => [ Leak Detection Pump, Checking ] Component Tests (VAG Code Tests).

Test ID 09 - Engine Coolant Temperature Sensor G62

Test Prerequisite

There must not be any DTCs stored in DTC memory => [ Diagnostic Mode 03 - Read DTC Memory ] , Diagnostic mode 3: Check DTC memory.

Procedure

- Connect diagnostic tester.

- Perform a road test until a coolant temperature of 80 to 100° C has been reached => [ Diagnostic Mode 01 - Read Current System Data ] , Diagnostic mode 1: Check measured values; PID 5, Coolant temperature.
