Steering system leaks, checking
Note: The steering system must be checked for leaks after assembly operations and in the case of hydraulic fluid loss in the expansion tank.
- Start engine.
- Turn steering to lock on both sides and hold briefly.
This builds up the maximum possible pressure.
Note: To avoid damaging the pump, never keep the steering wheel in the limit stop for more than 10 seconds when performing this test.
The following components must be checked for leaks in this position:
^ Sealing ring for steering pinion on valve housing of steering gear.
^ All line connections.
^ Rack sealing rings
This test can only be carried out with the sleeves pushed back.
- Open the sleeve's spring clamp and clamp.
- Push back sleeve.
Steering gear must be replaced if fluid is visible in steering gear housing and/or in the sleeves.
