Rear Final Drive

Special tools, testers and auxiliary items required

• Torque Wrench (V.A.G 1332)

• Engine/Transmission Jack (V.A.G 1383 A) with Universal Support (V.A.G 1359/2)

Removing

Refer to general repair instructions. Refer to => [ General Repair Information ] Rear Final Drive 0AR (02XA,0A3A,09EA,09LA Transmission).

- Remove the rear section of the exhaust system starting at the clamping sleeves - 1 - and - 2 -.





- Make sure there is a marking on the driveshaft and on the flange/driveshaft on the rear final drive - arrows A and B -.





- If no marking can be found, mark the position of the driveshaft flange - arrow A - to the rear final drive - arrow B - in color.

- Remove the driveshaft from the rear final drive - arrows -.





- Tie up the driveshaft to the side - arrow -.





- Remove the heat shields from rear final drive - arrows -.





- Remove the left and right drive axles.

- Place the (V.A.G 1383 A) together with the (V.A.G 1359/2) under the rear final drive.





- Remove the bolts on the transmission support - arrows A and B -.





- Remove the bolts on the rear crossmember - arrows -.





- Lower final drive slightly.





- Turn rear final drive slightly to the side and pull half shafts out of flange shafts alternately on each side.

- Lower the rear final drive completely out of the vehicle.

Installing the rear final drive - Audi A8





Installation is in reverse order of removal. Pay attention to the following:

- Turn the final drive to the side.

- Lift rear final drive and fit half shafts into flange shafts alternately on each side.

- Install and tighten the bolts - arrows -. Tightening specification - 5 - => [ Hex Socket Head Bolt ] Description and Operation.





- Tighten the bolts - A - and - B - hand-tight (the transmission support must contact with the final drive). First tighten bolt - A - and then bolts - B -. Tightening specifications - 11 - => [ Hex Socket Head Bolts ] Description and Operation and - 12 - => [ Hex Socket Head Bolts ] Description and Operation.





- Install drive axle.





- Attach heat shields to the rear final drive - arrows -. Tightening specification - 9 - => [ Combi Bolt ] Description and Operation.

- Replace the flange/driveshaft seal and tighten the driveshaft to the rear final drive making sure the markings align => [ Install the driveshaft on the
rear final drive. ] Drive Shaft, Removing From Rear Final Drive and Installing.

- Axle oil level in rear final drive, checking. Refer to => [ Gear Oil in Rear Final Drive, Checking ] Testing and Inspection.

- Install the rear section of the exhaust system and align it so it is free of tension.
