Drive Axle Assembly Overview, 88 mm Outer CV Joint
1 Cover
• Pry out with screwdriver, refer to => [ Inner CV Joint, Servicing ] Drive Axle, with 88 mm Outer CV Joint.
• Always replace.
• Replace the gasket - item 2 - before installing to the Constant Velocity (CV) joint.
• Pressing on, refer to => [ Inner CV Joint, Installing ] Drive Axle, with 88 mm Outer CV Joint.
2 Gasket
• Always replace.
3 Securing ring
• Remove and install with commercially available circlip pliers.
• Always replace.
4 Inner Constant Velocity (CV) Joint
• Exterior diameter: 108 mm
• Replace only as complete unit.
• Checking, refer to => [ Inner CV Joint, Checking ] Drive Axle, with 88 mm Outer CV Joint.
• Pressing off, refer to => [ Inner CV Joint, Servicing ] Drive Axle, with 88 mm Outer CV Joint.
• Pressing on, refer to => [ Inner CV Joint, Installing ] Drive Axle, with 88 mm Outer CV Joint.
• Adhesive surface must be free of oil and grease.
• When installing the CV joint onto the axle shaft, the splines on the axle shaft must be lightly coated with grease used in the CV joint.
5 Inner Constant Velocity (CV) Joint Boot with Cap
• Without ventilation bore.
• Carefully drive off the cap with a drift.
• Always replace.
• In case of damage, check the inner CV joint. Refer to => [ Inner CV Joint, Checking ] Drive Axle, with 88 mm Outer CV Joint.
• Before mounting onto the CV joint, coat the sealing surface with sealant (D 454 300 A2). Refer to => [ Inner CV Joint, Installing ] Drive Axle, with 88 mm Outer CV Joint.
• Align the cap to the screw holes.
• The CV joint boot/drive axle sealing surfaces must be free of grease when installing.
• Before tightening the clamp, briefly raise the CV joint boot to allow pressure to equalize.
6 Clamp
• Always replace.
• Tensioning => [ Inner CV Joint Boot Clamp,
Installing ] Drive Axle, with 88 mm Outer CV Joint.
7 Axle Shaft
• Drive axle, removing and installing. Refer to => [ Drive Axle ] Drive Axle.
8 Bolt
• Tightening specifications, refer to - item 19 - => [ Air Spring Damper, Wheel Bearing Housing and Wheel Hub and Bearing Assembly Overview ] Rear Suspension.
9 Backing Plate
10 Outer Constant Velocity (CV) Joint Boot
• Without ventilation bore.
• Check for tears and chafing; replace if necessary.
• In case of damage, check the outer CV joint, refer to => [ Outer CV Joint, Checking ] Drive Axle, with 88 mm Outer CV Joint.
• The protective boot/joint sealing surfaces must be free of grease when installing.
• Before tightening the clamp, briefly raise the CV joint boot to allow pressure to equalize.
11 Clamp
• Always replace.
• Tensioning, refer to => [ Outer CV Joint Clamp, Installing ] Drive Axle, with 88 mm Outer CV Joint.
12 Securing Ring
• Always replace.
• Insert in the axle shaft groove.
• Before installing the CV joint, align the sealing ring in the center with the opening facing upward.
13 Outer Constant Velocity (CV) Joint
• Exterior diameter: 88 mm.
• Replace only as complete unit.
• Checking, refer to => [ Outer CV Joint, Checking ] Drive Axle, with 88 mm Outer CV Joint.
• Driving off, refer to => [ Outer CV Joint, Servicing ] Drive Axle, with 88 mm Outer CV Joint.
• Installing: Drive onto the axle shaft using a plastic hammer until the compressed circlip seats.
• Circlip must lie in the joint chamfer when guiding in, guide with pliers if necessary.
• When installing the CV joint onto the axle shaft, the splines on the shaft must be lightly coated with grease used in the joint.
14 Bolt
• Always replace.

• Tightening specification, refer to => [ Installing ] Drive Axle.
Grease Quantity and Type
Re-grease the CV joint when replacing CV joint boot.
Fill the joints with grease.
• Note that the outer and inner CV joints use different types of grease.
