On Board Diagnostic (OBD), initiating program
VAG 1551 Scan Tool (ST), connecting and selecting functions
Note: The VAG 1552 Scan Tool (S7) can be used instead of the VAG 1551, however no print-out is possible.
Test requirements:
^ Selector lever in "P" and parking brake engaged.
^ Battery voltage OK
^ Supply voltage and fuses for respective systems OK
Refer to Electrical Wiring Diagrams, Troubleshooting Component Locations binder
^ Ground (GND) connections for transmission OK.
Refer to Electrical Wiring Diagrams, Troubleshooting & Component Locations binder
^ Check GND connections for corrosion and damage, repair as necessary.
^ Check battery GND strap and GND strap between battery and transmission.
^ Switch off ignition.
^ Connect OBD Tester and Information System VAS 5051 with adapter cable VAS 505 1 /1 . As an alternative connect V.A. G 1551 Scan Tool (ST) with adapter cable V.A.G 1551/3.
Note:
^ The Data Link Connector (DLC) is located in the front /left knee bar.
CAUTION:
^ Always secure VAS 5051 or V.A.G. 1551 on the rear seat A second technician using a safety belt Is needed to operate the equipment from there.
^ Always observe Safety Precautions
Note: The following procedure is based on using the VAG 1551 Scan Tool (ST). When using the OBD Tester and Information System VAS 5051, follow the operating instructions.
^ Switch on ignition.
Note:
^ If nothing is shown on the display, check the power supply to the DLC.

^ You can get additional operating instructions by pressing the HELP button on the V.A.G. 1551.
^Use the (arrow) button to advance through the program sequence.

^ In function I "Rapid data transmission", the automatic test sequence (buttons 00) can be performed. In this function all control modules of the vehicle are automatically checked.

Indicated on display:
Operating modes 1 and 2 appear alternately
^ Press brake pedal once
^ Switch on printer with PRINT button (light in button lights up)
^ Press button -1- for "Rapid data transfer' .

Note: After entering address word 00 and confirming with the Q button, the automatic test sequence can begin (DTC memory for every system is checked)
The DTC's stored in memory will be displayed and printed out one after the other.

^ Press buttons 0 and 2 to enter address word "Transmission Electronics".

^ Press Q button to confirm input.

Displayed are the control module identification, the control module code and the operating number of the V.A.G 1551 Scan Tool (ST).
Transmission Control Module (TCM) Identification
The TCM identification depends on the manufacturers status (data status). A control module identification may appear that is different than that in the example. For the correct TCM application

^ A list of possible malfunction causes can be printed out by pressing the HELP button.
^ After eliminating possible malfunction causes again enter address word 02 for "Transmission Electronics" and confirm by pressing the "Q" button.
If again "Control module does not answer' is displayed:

^ Perform test step 1, Electrical testing.
^ Check wiring connection to DLC
