Selector Lever Mechanism and Controls

Sector Lever Mechanism and Controls
5 Speed Automatic 01V

CAUTION: Make sure the selector lever is in "P"and the parking brake is securely set before working on car with engine running.

Note:
^ Lubricate bearing surfaces and slides with lubricant Part No. G 052 142 A2.
^ For repair or adjustment work remove the center console.

Ignition key removal lock, checking
- Turn ignition key to driving position (ignition on) then depress brake pedal and hold.
^ Shifting from "P" must be possible without "snagging" when button on selector lever is depressed.
^ It must not be possible to remove the ignition key in any driving position except in "P".
- Move selector lever to "P".
^ It must be possible to turn Ignition key to removing position without binding.
- Remove ignition key.
^ It must not be possible to move selector lever with depressed button in handle and depressed brake pedal from "P".

Shift mechanism, checking
Selector lever in "P" and ignition switched on.
^ With brake pedal not depressed:
The selector lever is locked and cannot be moved from "P" with depressed button in lever. The shift lock solenoid switch locks the selector lever.
^ With brake pedal depressed:
- The shift lock solenoid releases the selector lever. Selecting a driving range must be possible without binding or snagging with the button in the handle depressed.
- Move selector lever slowly from "P" to "R", N, D, 4, 3, 2" and check whether the driving range positions in the display of the instrument cluster are the same.

Selector lever in "N" and ignition switched on:
^ With brake pedal not depressed:
- The selector lever is locked and cannot be moved from "N" with depressed button in lever. The shift lock solenoid switch locks the selector lever.
^ With brake pedal depressed:
- The shift lock solenoid releases the selector lever. Selecting a driving range must be possible without binding or snagging with the button in the handle depressed.

Selector lever in "D", ignition and light switched on
Move selector lever out of driving range "D" into Tiptronic gate. The illumination of the "D" symbol on the cover of the shift mechanism must dim and the "+" and "-" symbols must light up.
^ Start engine and let idle.
^ Engage parking brake and depress brake pedal
The display of the selector lever position in the instrument cluster must change during shifting into the Tiptronic-gate from "PRND432" to "54321".

Note:
^ It must not be possible to operate the starter motor in driving ranges "2", "3", "4", "D" and "R".
^ For Right Hand Drive (RHD) vehicles, the starter should only be able to be operated with selector lever in "P" and "N" with locking button in selector lever handle released.
^ During vehicle speeds above 5 km/h (3 MPH) and shifting "N", the shift lock solenoid must not engage and lock the selector lever. The selector lever can be shifted into a driving range.
^ When driving slower than 2 km/h (1.2 MPH) (the car is almost stopped) and shifting into "N" the shift lock solenoid must only engage after about 1 second. The selector lever can only be shifted out of "N" when the brake pedal is depressed.

Fig. 5 Tiptronic Switch -F189
Location:
The Tiptronic switch is integrated in the printed circuit of the symbol insert located in the cover of the shift mechanism.
It consists of three Hall- sensors (-A-, -B, -C-) that are triggered by a magnet on the slide cover.
A - Sensor for downshift
B - Sensor for Tiptronic recognition
C - Sensor for upshift
- In case of problems check Tiptronic switch in OBD "Measuring value block" or check electrically

In case of malfunction first check whether the magnet on slide cover -C- is properly mounted, if necessary replace slide cover. Only replace symbol insert with integrated printed circuit after checking wiring. For vehicles with Tiptronic steering wheel also the buttons and their wiring connections on the steering wheel must be checked.
