Secondary Air Injection (AIR) Solenoid Valve -N112-, Checking W/VAS 5051A

Secondary Air Injection (AIR) Solenoid Valve -N112-, Checking

Special tools, testers and auxiliary items required

- Multimeter V.A.G 1526 B or V.A.G 1526 A
- Voltage tester V.A.G 1527 B
- Connector test kit V.A.G 1594 C or V.A.G 1594 A
- Test box 1598/31
- Vehicle Diagnostic, Testing and Information System VAS 5051 A with diagnostic cable VAS 5051/1

Work sequence

NOTE: Secondary Air Injection (AIR) Solenoid Valve -N112- and wiring connections are monitored by the Engine Control Module (ECM).

- Connect Vehicle Diagnostic, Testing and Information System VAS 5051 A and select vehicle system "01 - engine electronics". Ignition must be switched on Guided Fault Finding in VAS 5051 A.
- Check DTC memory of Engine Control Module (ECM) Guided Fault Finding in VAS 5051 A.

If a malfunction relating to Secondary Air Injection (AIR) Solenoid Valve -N112- is displayed:
- Bring lock carrier into service position.
[1][2]Procedures

- Remove front engine cover - arrows 1 and 2 -.

- Disconnect hoses from Secondary Air Injection (AIR) Solenoid Valve -N112- - arrow - ; electrical harness connector remains connected.

- Attach assisting hose to connection of valve indicated - arrow -.

- Vehicle Diagnostic, Testing and Information System VAS 5051 A connected, "Vehicle Self-Diagnosis" "01 Engine electronics" selected. Ignition must be switched on for this.

Display on VAS 5051 A:
- In selection - 1 -, click on function "03 - output Diagnostic Test Mode (DTM)".
- Press button repeatedly until Secondary Air Injection (AIR) Solenoid Valve -N112- is actuated.

- Valve must click
- Valve must open and close (can be tested by blowing into assisting hose)

- End function "03 - output Diagnostic Test Mode (DTM)" by pressing button.
- Select "06 - End Output".
- Switch ignition off.

If valve does not open or close properly:
- Replace Secondary Air Injection (AIR) Solenoid Valve -N112-.

If valve does not click during output Diagnostic Test Mode (DTM):
- Check internal resistance.

Checking internal resistance

- Disconnect electrical harness connector from Secondary Air Injection (AIR) Solenoid Valve -N112- - arrow -.

- Connect multimeter to valve for resistance measurement.
- Specified value: 19 to 27

If specified value is not obtained:
- Replace Secondary Air Injection (AIR) Solenoid Valve -N112-.

If specified value is obtained:
- Check voltage supply.

Checking voltage supply
- Fuse for Secondary Air Injection (AIR) solenoid valve OK Electrical Wiring Diagrams, Troubleshooting Component Locations
- Fuel Pump (FP) Relay -J17- OK

NOTE: Voltage is supplied to the Secondary Air Injection (AIR) Solenoid Valve -N112- via the Fuel Pump (FP) Relay -J17-.

- Connect voltage tester V.A.G 1527 B as follows:

Harness connector Measure to
Terminal

-1 - Engine Ground (GND)

- Operate starter briefly.

- LED must light up

If LED does not light up:
- Check wiring connection from harness connector terminal - 1 - to Fuel Pump (FP) Relay -J17- via fuse for open circuit according to wiring diagram.
- Repair wiring connection if necessary.

If LED lights up:
- Check activation.

Checking activation
- Connect voltage tester V.A.G 1527 B between terminals - 1 - and - 2 -.

- Press button repeatedly until Secondary Air Injection (AIR) Solenoid Valve -N112- is activated.

- LED must blink

- End function "03 - output Diagnostic Test Mode (DTM)" by pressing button.
- Select "06 - End Output".
- Switch ignition off.

If LED does not blink or if it remains constantly lit:

- Connect test box V.A.G 1598/31 to wiring harness connectors, Engine Control Module (ECM) is not connected. Connect Ground (GND) clip at test box to Ground (not visible in illustration). Test Box, Connecting For Wiring and Component Test

CAUTION: To avoid damaging electronic components, set measuring range before connecting test leads and observe all test requirements.

- Check following wiring connection for open circuit and short circuit to Ground (GND) and B+:
