Knock Sensors, Checking

Knock Sensors, Checking

Recommended special tools and equipment
- V.A.G 1526A multimeter
- V.A.G 1594A connector test kit
- V.A.G 1598/31 test box

NOTE:
- Cylinders 1 and 2 as well as 3 and 4 (bank 1) are monitored by Knock Sensor (KS) 1 -G61- and Knock Sensor (KS) 2 -G66-. Cylinders 5 and 6 as well as 7 and 8 (bank 2) are monitored by Knock Sensor (KS) 3 -G198- and Knock Sensor (KS) 4 -G199-.
- Knock sensors themselves cannot be checked electrically.
- When servicing terminals in harness connector of knock sensors, use only gold-plated terminals.
- For the knock sensors to function properly, it is important that tightening torque be exactly 20 Nm.
- Check harness connector from knock sensor to wiring harness for corrosion.

Test requirement:
- Ignition switched off.
- Bring lock carrier into service position.
[1][2]Procedures

Checking knock sensor wiring

- Disconnect electrical harness connector of respective knock sensor.

1. Knock Sensor (KS) 1 -G61-
2. Knock Sensor (KS) 2 -G66-
5. Knock Sensor (KS) 3 -G198-
6. Knock Sensor (KS) 4 -G199-

NOTE: Disregard items -3- and -4-.

- Check all three terminals at knock sensor connector for short circuit to each other (terminal 1+2, 1+3, 2+3).
- Specified value: Infinite Ohms. (no continuity) - the wires must not have any connection to each other.
- If there is a connection, replace knock sensor.

If no malfunction can be found:

Check wires from knock sensors to Engine Control Module (ECM).
- Connect test box to wiring harness of Engine Control Module (ECM), ECM is not connected. Test Box, Connecting For Wiring and Component Test

- Check the following wire connections for open circuit according to wiring diagram:

- Knock Sensor (KS) 1 -G61-

Harness connector Socket Test box
Terminal

1 Ground (GND) 99
2 (signal) 106
3 (shielding) 108

- Knock Sensor (KS) 2 -G66-

Harness connector Test box Socket
Terminal

1 Ground (GND) 99
2 (signal) 107
3 (shielding) 108

- Knock Sensor (KS) 3 -G198-

Harness connector Test box Socket
Terminal

1 Ground (GND) 99
2 (signal) 31
3 (shielding) 108

- Knock Sensor (KS) 4 -G199-

Harness connector Test box Socket
Terminal

1 Ground (GND) 99
2 (signal) 16
3 (shielding) 108

Specified value: Wire resistance max 1.5 Ohms

- Check wires for short circuit to each other as well as to B+ and Ground (GND).

Specified value: Infinity Ohms. (no continuity)

- If necessary, repair wire connection.

Assembly is performed in reverse order of removal, note the following:
- Install lock carrier with attachments.
[1][2]Procedures

- Place impact for torque support on rubber buffer for torque support, letting it rest under its own weight and tighten bolts (arrows) to 28 Nm.
- Install front bumper:
- Adjust headlights:

Final procedures
After repair work, the following work steps must be performed in the mentioned sequence:
1. Check DTC memory, Diagnostic mode 3 - Check DTC memory. Mode 3: Check DTC Memory
2. Erase DTC memory, Diagnostic mode 4 - Reset/erase diagnostic data. Mode 4: Reset/Erase Diagnostic Data
3. Generate readiness code. Readiness Code, Generating

- End diagnosis and switch ignition off.
